At least 56 dead, 1900 homes burned in renewed ethnic violence in western …
News from Washington Post:

KYAUKTAW, Myanmar — At least 56 people have been killed and 1,900 homes destroyed in renewed ethnic violence in western Myanmar as the government warned perpetrators and the international community appealed for calm.

About 75,000 people remain in refugee camps since an outbreak of violence in June between the Buddhist Rakhine and Muslim Rohingya communities in which at least 90 people were killed and more than 3,000 homes were destroyed. Curfews in place in some areas since then have been expanded with the latest violence, but tensions have stayed high in part because the government has failed to find any long-term solution other than segregating the communities, which have long been in conflict.

Take a look at some of the week’s best photographs from around the globe.

At 79, Artie Mae Grisby caps child care career with bachelor’s degree
News from Denver Post:

University of Northern Colorado senior Artie Mae Grisby, 79, takes notes during her American History 1600-1877 class at UNC’s Center for Urban Education. Grisby, who earned an associate’s degree in her 50s, is set to earn a bachelor’s in the spring. (AAron Ontiveroz, The Denver Post)

Visiting a friend’s child-care operation many years ago in Louisiana, Artie Mae Grisby saw nothing but runny noses and dirty diapers and knew immediately she’d never go into that line of work.

Oh, how her vision changed.

And now, after a career spent pioneering the field in Colorado and helping shape state child-care standards, Grisby — at 79 — is just a few months from earning her bachelor’s degree in early-childhood education.

“It’s been a lifelong dream,” she says. “I’m being validated. A lot of the things I knew, now I know exactly why I know what I know.”

In other words, experience counts. Grisby has pursued her education in unconventiona…………… continues on Denver Post

Chicago braces for violence at NATO summit
News from Reuters:

CHICAGO | Tue May 15, 2012 7:02pm EDT

CHICAGO (Reuters) – Chicago police, who have a reputation for dealing toughly with protesters, will be prepared for the worst with new riot gear, including “sound cannon”, if demonstrators at the NATO summit get out of line this weekend.

America’s third-largest city and President Barack Obama’s hometown has never hosted anything like the meeting starting on Sunday, which will draw representatives from some 50 countries, including leaders of the 28 members of the military alliance.

The two-day summit is also drawing protesters from around the United States and beyond, most to protest peacefully against the NATO-led war in Afghanistan and economic inequality.

Protest organizers hope thousands will turn out to demonstrate on Sunday and march to the summit site at a sprawling convention center along Lake Michigan.

Police said they will be keepin…………… continues on Reuters

Key witness at Roger Clemens’ trial: Evidence saved as insurance
News from Los Angeles Times:

WASHINGTON — An anxious wife drove Brian McNamee to hold on to evidence of Roger Clemens’ steroid use for self-protection, the former trainer testified at the former pitcher’s federal perjury trial.

“She kept saying in the midst of a battle royale, ‘You’re going to go down if something ever happens,’ ” McNamee said.

So as a measure of insurance, McNamee said, he held on to a beer can filled with a used needle, a syringe and a glass steroid ampule he had fished out of Clemens’ recycling bin in 2001. McNamee said he put the waste in a FedEx box and stashed it in a closet at his Queens home.

The waste now forms critical evidence in Clemens’ trial: The government contends it contains traces of the former pitching star’s DNA and steroids, tying him directly to the drug. And that, prosecutors argue, means he lied in 2008 when he told a congressional committee he had never u…………… continues on Los Angeles Times

At Least 30 Reported Killed in New Syrian Violence
News from Voice of America:

Violence has surged in Syria as Western members of the United Nations Security Council spar with Russia over how to stop the bloodshed from the 10-month uprising against President Bashar al-Assad.

The Syrian-based activist group Local Coordination Committees said Mr. Assad’s security forces on Tuesday killed at least 30 people, 19 of them in the troubled central province of Homs. The group said eight civilians died when a minibus struck a roadside bomb planted by pro-government soldiers in northern Idlib province.

France, Britain and the U.S. are pushing for strong condemnation of Syria. Western diplomats say they cannot accept Russia’s draft Security Council resolution that assigns equal blame for the violence to the government and opposition. Senior diplomats from the U.N. body were to meet Tuesday to discuss the revised Russian draft.

U.S. President Barack Obama Tuesday condemned Syria’s continued crackdown on protesters, calling the violence “unacceptable” and vowing to redouble international efforts to force Mr. Assad to step down.

Earlier, Syria rejected a Qatari proposal to send Arab troops to the country to stop the unrest, saying such a move would worsen the situation and open the door to foreign interference. The Syrian foreign ministry said Damascus will oppose any attempt to undermine its sovereignty and wants Arab nations to stop wh…………… continues on Voice of America

AG’s Cell Phone Recycling Drive to Help Domestic Violence Victims
News from Patch.com:

To recognize National Domestic Violence Awareness Month, Attorney General Peter F. Kilmartin is holding a cell phone recycling drive to benefit victims of domestic violence and the Rhode Island Coalition Against Domestic Violence (RICADV).

The drive also disposes of old cell phones in an environmentally safe way.  Throughout the month of October, the public is invited to drop off old and discarded cell phones and cell phone accessories at the Office of Attorney General in Providence and several courthouse offices throughout Rhode Island.

Cell phones can become an effective tool in the fight against domestic violence.  Instead of being discarded, an old phone can be refurbished and put to good use against domestic abuse through a cell phone recycling program. Cell phones are then reprogrammed and used as 911 Emergency phones for individuals in the community at risk of domestic violence. This communication may provide a critical link between law enforcement and a victi…………… continues on Patch.com
