WILKINSBURG (KDKA) — Two brothers are now being charged in connection with a fight that was recorded inside a local school bathroom.

But police are still looking for two other people who were in the bathroom while the brutal beating happened.

“I just want them removed from school. I want them to go to Schuman Center. I want them to feel what it is like to be bullied.”

That’s what 13-year-old Aisa Whitfield told KDKA’s Brenda Waters Friday afternoon from his home.

The seventh grade student at Wilkinsburg Middle School is talking about the teens who allegedly beat him up in a boy’s bathroom on Thursday afternoon.

As the attack was going on, another boy recorded it with his cell phone. The video was then posted on Facebook.

In the video, you can see that at no time did Aisa fight back, saying he did not want to. He just wanted to get away from a beating that continued to the cafeteria.

Aisa’s mother, Nickcole Whitfield, says her son was bullied long before Thursday afternoon, and if school officials had listened to her, perhaps the fight would have never happened.

She says the problems have always been with the same boys.

Meanwhile, two brothers, ages 13 and 14, have been charged with assault, conspiracy and unlawful restraint. Both were taken to Schuman Center.

But it seems that some of the cops missed that memo.

The American Civil Liberties Union plans to file a federal lawsuit Wednesday against the department after receiving complaints from city residents who claim that they were arrested and charged with disorderly conduct for recording officers in public, an act that the ACLU says is a First Amendment right.

“Clearly there’s a pattern of Philadelphia police trying to discourage people from watching what they do by arresting them and charging them with crimes,” said Mary Catherine Roper, staff attorney at the ACLU. “We’re just not sure the message got through.”

Just a few years ago, coming back from an early morning hike with some pretty photos was about as productive as you could get. Now, new mobile apps make it easy for nature lovers to contribute to science too.

Sophie Gerrick, a fourth year student at UCLA uses an app called Project Budburst to monitor trees as the seasons change.

“We’re at a really interesting looking tree which I happen to know is sycamore tree in this case,” she says as she takes a picture of a tree with her phone. 

“[My phone] automatically finds the location for me and it’s pretty accurate,” says Gerrick.

Recording exact locations and times for every observation is a cumbersome part of collecting data. With these apps, that’s taken care of.

“I can add any notes that I want, so I’m gonna say that all the leaves have fallen and that the plant is at the end of this stage,” Gerrick says.

She hits done and her phone sends the info to the Project BudBurst database — a public database that scientists can access to see if plants are hitting growth stages at the right time. Other apps track things like air pollution, endangered species, and water conditions.

Cell phone video just released by prosecutors offers a chilling view into the mind of a Florida teenager who in 2011 was charged with plotting to kill teachers and students with bombs at his Tampa high school.

Jared Cano, then 17, wrote a manifesto that detailed his plans for an attack in August 2011 on the first day of classes at Freedom High School in Tampa, Fla., from which he had been expelled in March 2010. Police arrived at the home where Cano lives with his mother to arrest him. In his home police recovered bomb-making material, including fuses, timers, shrapnel, accelerant and plastic tubing.

In the recently released video, Cano outlines to the minute his plans to blow up Freedom High School.

“For those of you retards who don’t know who I am, I’m the Freedom High School shooter in Tampa, Florida. Well I will be in a couple months,” Cano says on the video. “My plan is to set a bomb here at point A, here at point B, point C and point D. Then I got to get to the side entrance of the school by 7:24. The bombs blow at 7:26.”

SOMERVILLE – A man accused of shooting another man outside his parents’ three-family home on Broadway in Somerville took cellphone footage leading up the incident that prosecutors say shows he escalated an argument that led to the shooting.

Santano Dessin, 33, of 169 Broadway was ordered held without bail by Judge Maurice Flynn in an arraignment Tuesday morning in Somerville District Court. He will be held pending a dangerousness hearing in Somerville District Court Friday.

Dessin allegedly shot a 28-year-old Somerville man in the neck during an argument with the victim and two other men, including one building tenant, on the front steps of his family’s home at 169 Broadway about 11:30 p.m. Sunday.

NASCAR fined Sprint Cup points leader Brad Keselowski $ 25,000 for having a cell phone in his race car, the governing body announced Monday. NASCAR issued penalties to three teams that compete in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, as a result of rule infractions at Phoenix International Raceway.

NASCAR did not say how the cell phone was discovered but issued the following statement regarding the penalty:

Kids made cellphone videos of what went on in a Kopachuck Middle School classroom last year.

But grown-ups determined what happened in the aftermath of the apparent bullying incident – one that was allowed to play out for an estimated 15 minutes while a teacher watched and, at some points, joined in.

Now many, including online commenters and callers to the Peninsula School District, are questioning whether school officials did the right thing by suspending the veteran teacher for 10 days without pay and not firing him.

Chuck Cuzzetto, currently acting superintendent but deputy superintendent at the time the incident occurred in February, said he understands why parents are concerned.

“I was horrified by the video,” he said. “It’s certainly not horseplay. It’s very inappropriate behavior on the part of the students and on the part of the teacher. There’s no excuse for what happened.”

Cuzzetto said the final decision on disciplinary action against teacher John Rosi was made by the School Board, on the recommendation of then-Superintendent Terry Bouck.

Bouck retired at the end of the school year and subsequently took a job as superintendent of schools in Billings, Mont. He could not be reached for comment Friday.

ACCORDING to the GSM Association, an association of worldwide mobile phone operators, Africa is the fastest-growing mobile market in the world with an annual 20% subscriber growth in the past five years. The association expects the continent’s subscriber base to exceed 735 million by end of 2012 as network operators take advantage of bad and expensive landline connections.

Zimbabwe has been part of this phenomenal growth with the Postal and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe (Potraz) indicating a penetration rate of about 80% in June this year. Statistics show Econet has the lion’s share of the country’s subscriber base with about 6,4 million customers followed by Telecel (1,8 million) and state-owned NetOne (1,6 million).

The three networks remain mainly confined to urban areas, while their increasing operational problems deny millions of customers value for money.

Detracting from these operators’ achievements — with disturbing frequency — is the deteriorating quality of service, leaving customers frustrated as they often fail to complete or receive calls uninterrupted.

The latest video to illustrate the dangers of using your cellphone while walking is of a Philadelphia man falling onto a set of lowered train tracks while talking on his device. The incident occurred last year but video from the station’s security cameras was recently released. (Note: In the above video, the fall is played over-and-over. We’ll update with a better video when we get one).

Security cameras caught him on his phone when he fell onto the tracks and was knocked unconcious. Fortunately, there were no trains headed to the station at that time, but it was late at night and no one was around to save him. He eventually awoke and moved to safety, but it could have been much worse.

This highlights the increasingly common problem of distracted walking, caused by people who can’t take their eyes or ears away from their cellphones.

It can be difficult to turn away from our phones and other mobile devices while walking. Numerous studies show that our mobile devices have become an addition for many of us, with 60% of respondants in one survey saying they typically don’t go longer than an hour without checking their phone.

I used to think the Department of Motor Vehicles was the best place to find a collection of individuals in catatonic states that cannot be broken, even when an employee says, “it will just be a few more minutes.”

Then I visited a cellphone repair store.

The latter occurred while on a business trip to Las Vegas. My loyal Blackberry Bold suddenly turned into the Blackberry Timid. Calls dropped, keys became stuck and the Trackpad was neither tracking or padding. Eventually the Bold froze completely, prompting me to use my lonely in-room phone at the Bellagio to make a 90-second call to a local Sprint store and set up an appointment. Bellagio personnel termed that a “long distance call” and charged me $ 12.98 even though the store was two miles away. The next time you see the breathtaking and gloriously expensive dancing fountain show at the Bellagio, please silently thank me for my financial contribution.

Once inside a repair store, it’s very apparent that all the customers have two things in common: NOBODY dropped their phone and ABSOLUTELY NOBODY had their phone near water. Even if a technician removes the battery and a smallmouth bass swims out, the phone’s owner will insist that somebody must have stolen the phone during the night, tossed it in a lake, retrieved it and set it back on the nightstand before morning.

After Howard ran a red light and caused a five-car collision in Ypsilanti Township last year, killing a woman and injuring her two children, Smith grabbed his cellphone, planning to dial 911.

Realizing police had already arrived, he instead used the BlackBerry to record a video of the chaos after the Oct. 26, 2010, accident at the intersection of Ecorse and Harris roads.
