At least 2 dozen children killed in latest Syria attack
News from Fox News:
BEIRUT – Gruesome video Saturday showed rows of dead Syrian children lying in a mosque in bloody shorts and T-shirts with gaping head wounds, haunting images of what activists called one of the deadliest regime attacks yet in Syria’s 14-month-old uprising.
The shelling attack on Houla, a group of villages northwest of the central city of Homs, killed more than 90 people, including at least 32 children under the age of 10, the head of the U.N. observer team in Syria said.
The attacks sparked outrage from U.S. and other international leaders, and large protests in the suburbs of Syria’s capital of Damascus and its largest city, Aleppo. It also renewed fears of the relevance of a month-old international peace plan that has not stopped almost daily violence.
The U.N. denounced the attacks in a statement that appeared to hold President Bashar Assad’s regime responsible, and the White House called the violence acts of “unspeakable and inhuman brutality.”
“This appalling and brutal crime involving indiscriminate and disproportionate use of force is a flagrant violation of international law and of the commitments of the Syrian government to cease the use of heavy weapons in population centers and violence in all its forms,” said U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon and international envoy Kofi Annan. “Those responsible f…………… continues on Fox News

Activist report calm in Syria at truce deadline
News from Fox News:
BEIRUT – Opposition activists said Syria’s uprising hotspots were quiet after a deadline for a U.N.-brokered truce passed at dawn Thursday, hours after President Bashar Assad’s regime promised special peace envoy Kofi Annan it would halt fighting.
It was the first brief lull after weeks of escalating attacks on opposition strongholds.
Still, expectations were low for an abrupt end to the bloodshed that has roiled Syria for 13 months and claimed more than 9,000 lives. Syria has backtracked on previous peace plans, has characterized the uprising it’s facing as a terrorist plot and has escalated the shelling of rebellious areas in recent weeks.
The regime also set an important truce condition when it announced Wednesday it would halt the fighting — saying it still has a right to defend itself against the terrorists that it says are behind the country’s uprising.
Under Annan’s plan, the cease-fire is to be followed by the deployment of an observer mission and negotiations between Assad’s government and the opposition on a political transition.
Opposition activists said the 6 a.m. Thursday truce deadline passed without reports of major violence.

Crowd at ‘new Jim Crow’ meeting applauds arrest of Trayvon Martin shooter
News from Chicago Tribune:
Stephen Watts was glad to hear Wednesday that murder charges were filed in the death of Florida teenager Trayvon Martin, if only because he hoped an investigation of his son’s shooting by Calumet City police in February might also lead to criminal charges.
Watts’ autistic 15-year-old son, Stephon, was killed by Calumet City police officers in a confrontation at the Watts home on Feb. 1, a case that still is under investigation by the Illinois State Police.
“I was glad to hear the charges were filed and so we can finally get justice for Trayvon, and maybe I can get justice for Stephon,” Watts said Wednesday evening as he was about to speak before an audience of more than 100 as part of a panel discussion titled “Trayvon Martin and the fight against the new Jim Crow.”

Cell phone videos show horrors inside Syria
News from CBS News:
(CBS News)
We’re experiencing one of those times in history when an aging dictatorship hangs on to power by using military force against its own people. For nearly a year we’ve been following the freedom movement in Syria. It appears the dictator Bashir al-Assad is rushing to crush the rebellion before the world can do much about it.
The city of Homs – remember the name – is a little bigger than Philadelphia and it’s been under artillery fire for two weeks. Rebels claim 100 civilians were killed Tuesday alone. The citizens there have been filming the siege on cell phones. The video above shows the sights and sounds of what it’s like to be a citizen of Homs today.
The man shooting the video was saying: “We are being slaughtered. Where are you, all Arabs?”
21 countries of the Arab League have suspended Syria’s membership. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton will be in Tunisia on Friday to meet with representatives of 70 countries to talk about what might be done to stop the killing.

Brain chooses cellphone-listening ear
News from UPI.com:
Published: Feb. 21, 2012 at 5:36 PM
DETROIT, Feb. 21 (UPI) – There is a strong correlation between left/right brain dominance and the ear people choose to listen to a cellphone with, a U.S. study found.
In the study conducted by the Henry Ford Health System in Detroit, more than 70 percent of participants held their cellphones up to the ear on the same side as their dominant hand.
Left brain dominant people — those whose speech and language center is on the left side of the brain — are more likely to use their right hand for writing and other everyday tasks, including holding a cellphone, the study found.
This practice, researchers said, appears illogical since it is challenging to listen on the phone with the right ear and take notes with the right hand.
Similarly, right brain dominant people are more likely to use the left hand to hold the phone, the researchers found.
“Our findings have several implications, especially for mapping the language center of the brain,” Michael Seidman, director of the division of otologic and neurotologic surgery at Henry Ford, said.
The study also may offer additional evidence that cell phone use and brain, and head and neck tumors may not be linked, he said.

Cell-phone videos prompt Syria to ban iPhones
News from Jerusalem Post:
Syria has said it will ban the use of iPhones, in an apparent bid by the embattled Damascus regime to stem the flow of mobile-phone footage exposing its brutal eight-month clampdown on anti-government protests.
The move, announced Saturday by the Finance Ministry’s Customs Department, follows this summer’s shut-down of all Internet and 3G mobile networks in an attempt to keep protesters from coordinating demonstrations.
Leaked cell-phone videos from Syria have been one of the prime movers of public opinion within the country and abroad against the Bashar Assad government. Footage has emerged almost daily showing security forces firing on unarmed protesters and humiliating and abusing detainees.
In a short YouTube clip uploaded late last week, the Syrian-American biological father of Apple cofounder Steve Jobs condemned the ongoing crackdown, which is believed to have claimed around 4,000 lives and wounded…………… continues on Jerusalem Post

The People’s Pharmacy People’s Pharmacy: Risk from bra cellphone?
News from The Seattle Times:
Q: For convenience, I keep my cellphone on vibrate in my bra. I have heard that you shouldn’t keep your cellphone close to your ear for long periods. Does the same hold true for your bra? My sister had breast cancer, so it runs in the family. Am I being exposed to radiation even if I am not talking?
A: The effect of radio frequency (RF) radiation on the body remains controversial. Studies are equivocal whether there is an increased risk of cancer.
Even when you are not talking, a cellphone periodically emits RF to connect with a cell tower or network. Whether this low-level electromagnetic radiation poses a risk to the breast has not been well studied (Annual Review of Public Health, 2005).
