Many Lubbock drivers support cell phone ban
News from KCBD-TV:
LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) -
Cell phone addicts, your texting privileges behind the wheel are not gone yet, but City Council members did discuss the ban for the first time Thursday night.
Mayor Glen Robertson has called the issue “polarizing” – either you’re strongly in support of a ban, or strongly against it. So KCBD set out to hear what Lubbock drivers had to say about a possible cell phone ban.
“As far as texting goes, no. I’m 100 percent against it,” Lee Reese said.
“I think it’s a pretty good idea. I think accidents have been on the rise,” Scott Salyer said.
Most Hub City drivers we talked to shared this sentiment – full support for a ban on cell phone use behind the wheel. However, we did find one woman who wasn’t so welcoming of a possible ban.
“I wouldn’t feel right because if I want to text someone, let me text,” Betty Beavers said.
Beavers believes that this ordinance is an infringement of her rights.
“They need to stay out of my business, everyone’s business. Let us be, we’re supposed to do whatever we want in the USA,” Beavers said.
Councilwoman Karen Gibson thinks that’s a fair argument, but she’s also concerned of the logistics of passing such a ban.
“Everyone wants to stop it. I want it stopped. But then you’ve got the problem, can it ever be enfor…………… continues on KCBD-TV

2012-11-09T20:00:00Z Cellphone analysis cannot determine use during fatal Kingsbury crashDON LEHMAN — dlehman@poststar.com The Post-Star
FORT EDWARD — An analysis of the cellphone that a Queensbury woman had when she drove off a road and killed a woman cutting grass last year could not determine whether the phone was in use at the time of the collision.
The phone found in the vehicle driven by Deana M. Olsen when she went off Route 4 in Kingsbury and killed Terry Brownell on the front lawn of Brownell’s home was analyzed by State Police computer experts. Olsen was charged with manslaughter and lesser counts for allegedly using a cellphone and driving under the influence of drugs just before the Aug. 27, 2011, crash.
Washington County sheriff’s Investigator Bruce Hamilton wrote in a report filed in court that investigators could not say whether the phone was being used in the moments because no time-stamped messages from that period were discovered.
“In other words, if there is no message sent, there is no date or time stamp,” Hamilton wrote.
However, the user could have been viewing or reading messages or using the Blackberry-type phone for other purposes that w…………… continues on Glens Falls Post-Star

Which cellphone carrier offers the best customer support?
News from Mother Nature Network:
Image: Laptopmag.com
Cellphone shoppers generally judge wireless carriers based on their networks’ speed, size and—above all—reliability. But reliability extends to customer service. Will your carrier be able to help when something goes wrong? And can you get your questions answered in a timely fashion?
With that in mind, we performed a survey of the country’s four largest service providers—AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile and Verizon Wireless—to determine which offers the best service and which could use some lessons in customer appreciation.
How We Tested
To get a complete view of each carrier’s customer support options, we visited two of their brick-and-mortar stores, placed two phone calls to their tech-support hotlines and tried to connect with them via their Web services. For our tests, we used purchased phones (instead of review units) to help ensure we received genuine user experiences.
Our test beds included an AT&T Motorola Atrix 4G, a Sprint EVO 4G, a T-Mobile G2x and a Verizon Wireless Motorola Droid X. To ensure our testing was fair, we posed the same three questions to each carrier’s service representatives: “How can I tether my phone to my notebook,” “How can I upload photos from my phone to Facebook?” and “How do I improve my phone’s batte…………… continues on Mother Nature Network

Police Find Cell Phone Stolen In Pizza-Deliveryman Robbery
News from Patch.com:
SOUTH KINGSTOWN – Police still have no suspects, but are hopeful the cell phone belonging to the pizza deliveryman that was stolen during the Sunday night robbery can provide more clues.
The cell phone was found on the bike path today, said Capt. Jeffrey Allen.
“The cell phone was secured for processing, but it has been exposed to the elements and we don’t know how many people have touched it,” Allen said when asked if it could be dusted for finger prints.
A caller from a private number placed an order for delivery to 4 Mechanic Street in Wakefield from the Domino’s Pizza in Narragansett.
According to a press release by Det. Sgt. Joel Ewing-Chow, as the deliveryman walked up to the residence at around 6:30 p.m., he noticed the house was in complete darkness and appeared to be abandoned.
The home is owned by Doris F. Martin, according to tax assessor’s records.
The deliveryman, who was not identified by police, was then approached by an individual wearing a ski mask, dark clothing and gloves. He allegedly told the deliveryman to put down the food – two medium pizzas, a 1-liter Sprite and 14-piece box of hot wings – and proceeded to steal his money and cell phone. The deliveryman said he thought the suspect had a handgun in his waistband…………… continues on Patch.com

IBEW union warns members to support Verizon strike
News from NorthJersey.com:
The president of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers told the union’s members Saturday not to break ranks in its strike against Verizon Communication Inc. in response to reports of locals doing contract work for the communications company.
The union has been on strike against Verizon since Aug. 7.
“I have received reports that members of two IBEW locals are performing contracting work for Verizon, even as members of our union and the Communications Workers of America are on strike to preserve middle-class standards in their contract,” said Edwin D. Hill, the international president of the IBEW. “I wish to state in no uncertain terms that IBEW locals are not to engage in such actions while their brothers and sisters are on strike.”
Verizon has been granted an injunction to limit picketing by striking workers in New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania and Delaware.

Frank Mathews: AT&T merger with T-Mobile benefits consumers
News from La Crosse Tribune:
At a recent hearing, U.S. Sen. Herb Kohl framed the debate over the merger of AT&T and T-Mobile this way: “So the burden will squarely be on AT&T and T-Mobile to convince us why this merger is desirable, how it will benefit consumers, and to put aside our concerns that it may very well harm competition.”
Kohl has a distinguished record focusing on issues that affect consumers. As chairman of the Judiciary’s Subcommittee on Antitrust, Competition Policy and Consumer Rights, the senator is focused on making sure the free market works to the benefit of consumers.
In the case of the AT&T and T-Mobile merger, consumers will be among the winners — along with school systems, health care providers and jobless Americans.
One of the most important outcomes of this merger will be the improved service and pricing that will result from combining these two wireless companies. Because they operate on compatible systems, the merger allows for rapid integration of th…………… continues on La Crosse Tribune
