Las Vegas Man’s Home Targeted By Seekers of Lost Sprint Cell Phones
News from ABC News:
If you lost your Sprint cell phone, don’t come knocking on the door of Wayne Dobson, 58.
In the two years that Dobson has lived in his one-story home with his wife, five people–all missing their Sprint cell phones–have come knocking on his door, demanding that he return their handsets.
If a GPS tracker for your lost cell phone leads you to Dobson’s home, you’ll find a sign outside his door in North Las Vegas, Nev., that reads, “No lost cell phones!! This location gives a false ‘phone locator’ position due to a cell tower behind this home. Please contact the North Las Vegas Police and file a report.”
“I put it up because there seems to be no end to this,” he said.
On Dec. 18, four men who Dobson described as “young” pounded on his door at around 2:30 a.m., shouting for him to return their phone. One of the men had a tablet with a tracking application, pointing to Dobson’s home.
“I understand why people are upset. These are $ 300 or $ 500 devices,” Dobson said. “I’m worrying about someone showing up in an agitated state, are drinking, and if that one person has a weapon perhaps. This is Las Vegas.”
He told the men repeatedly that he didn’t have their cell phone and they eventually went away.

Report: Japanese cellphone company Softbank to buy 70 percent of Sprint Nextel
News from Washington Post:
WASHINGTON — Japanese mobile phone company Softbank has agreed to buy 70 percent of Sprint Nextel Corp. for $ 20 billion, according to a news report.
The deal is expected to be announced Monday, according to CNBC’s web site, which cited anonymous sources “close to the situation.”
The transaction could make Sprint, the third-largest U.S. mobile phone company, a tougher competitor against its bigger rivals, Verizon Wireless and AT&T. Sprint has 56 million subscribers, about half the amount of Verizon Wireless, the leading U.S. mobile phone company.
Softbank will buy $ 8 billion in shares from Sprint and another $ 12 billion from current Sprint shareholders, the CNBC report said. Softbank will offer $ 7.30 a share, CNBC said, about 27 percent above Friday’s closing price of $ 5.73.
John Taylor, a spokesman for Sprint, declined to comment beyond the company’s statement last week confirming that it was in talks with Softbank.
Word of the talks pushed up Sprint’s stock more than 14 percent on Thursday.
Sprint has struggled in recent years to compete with Verizon and AT&T. The company has $ 21 billion in long-term debt, and has launched a costly network restructuring and signed a long-term contract to buy $ 15.5 billion worth of iPhones from Apple over four years.

Phone smuggling case costs 20 California prison workers their jobs
News from Los Angeles Times:
Twenty California prison employees suspected of smuggling cellphones to inmates have resigned or were fired in recent months, according to a report from the state’s prison watchdog agency.
Most of those employees were accused of taking the phones in for cash, while others were suspected of doing it for love or something like it, according to the report.
One inmate caught with a phone had text messages and nude photos sent by a female guard, the report says. Another inmate was caught with love letters and a childhood photo from a guard accused of providing him the phone.
And a female prison office worker was accused of smuggling a phone to an inmate who is suspected of fathering her child. When prosecutors reviewing the case for possible criminal charges requested a DNA sample from the clerk she resigned, the report states.
The proliferation of cellphones in prisons is a significant public safety concern, officials say. Inmates have run street gangs from behind bars, intimidated witnesses and orchestrated assaults on guards, they said.
The report released this month by the prison’s Office of the Inspector General identified 419 cases of serious rules violations monitored by the watchdog agency in the first six months of this year. Among the cases were those of 54 employees accused of smuggling phones. In addition t…………… continues on Los Angeles Times

Alerts coming to new cell phones
News from Redwood Falls Gazette:
Minnesotans will now be able to receive time-sensitive, critical information about severe weather, emergencies, and disasters with the next generation of emergency alerts on their smart phones and cell phones. Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA) are location-specific so recipients will receive an alert based on their current geographical location, not where they live.
The Minnesota Department of Public Safety will be ready to send imminent threat public safety alerts very soon. The National Weather Service will be ready to send severe weather alerts within the next week or two.
“Time is critical in an emergency and warnings using this new technology will help people take action to be safe,” said Kris Eide, director of the Minnesota Department of Public Safety Division of Homeland Security Emergency Management (HSEM). “Adding cell phone alerts to the current mix of outdoor warning sirens and notification by television and radio will save lives.”
The emergency alerts will include what action the recipient should take. For example the alert message will let recipients know there is a tornado warning for a particular area and those in the area are advised to seek shelter.
“It is important to have weather warnings available in many different formats that include instruction on what protective action to take,” said Todd Krause, Warning Coordination Meteorologist…………… continues on Redwood Falls Gazette

Yonkers, NY - When it comes to cell-phone carriers smaller may be better, according to a new satisfaction survey of Consumer Reports online subscribers. At the top of the Ratings for standard service providers were Consumer Cellular, a national carrier that uses AT&T’s network, and U.S. Cellular, which operates in just over half the United States.
Credo, which offers service to much of the country on Sprint’s network, also bested the major carriers. AT&T, America’s second-largest carrier, again found itself at the bottom of the Ratings.

FairPoint trust sues Verizon for $ 2 billion
News from BusinessWeek:
By CLARKE CANFIELD
PORTLAND, Maine
A litigation trust created for FairPoint Communications Inc. creditors is blaming Verizon Communications for FairPoint’s bankruptcy.
In a $ 2 billion fraudulent transfer lawsuit filed in North Carolina last week, the FairPoint litigation trust claims FairPoint went bankrupt because of its “disastrous” $ 2.3 billion purchase of Verizon’s landline and Internet operations in Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont in 2008. FairPoint filed for bankruptcy 18 months after the acquisition.
The complaint alleges that Verizon lured FairPoint into the deal and dealt it a bad hand, resulting in FairPoint buying “inferior assets that had no future.” FairPoint exhibited a blend of naivete and optimism on its part, but FairPoint executives felt trapped by the time they saw the writing on the wall, the suit alleges.

AT&T, Verizon face pension concerns, analyst says
News from CNET:
AT&T and Verizon Communications face billions of dollars in unfunded pension liabilities, which could significantly weigh on their bottom lines, according to one Wall Street analyst.
If the market closed today, AT&T could be on the hook for $ 41.6 billion in unfunded pension liabilities, while Verizon could see $ 31.6 billion in liabilities, Sanford C. Bernstein analyst Craig Moffett said in a research note issued today. Moffett downgraded AT&T’s stock rating and maintained his already low rating on Verizon.
The pension liabilities could be costly to the companies and shareholders. Moffett estimates that the funding requirements could hurt AT&T’s earnings by $ 1.04 a share this year and cut into Verizon’s earnings by $ 1.34. He also lowered his stock price targets for the companies by $ 1 each, to $ 30 for AT&T and $ 32 for Verizon.

Sprint Has Failed to Give Documents in US Case, AT&T Says
News from BusinessWeek:
October 22, 2011, 12:23 AM EDT
By Sara Forden
Oct. 22 (Bloomberg) — AT&T Inc. told a federal judge that Sprint Nextel Corp. should be forced to turn over documents AT&T subpoenaed for its defense against a U.S. lawsuit seeking to block its purchase of T-Mobile USA Inc.
AT&T asked the judge in a filing yesterday to compel Sprint to provide the documents “immediately,” saying that the Overland Park, Kansas-based company has yet to respond to its Sept. 26 subpoena seeking documents relevant to the Justice Department’s claims against AT&T. Sprint is a so-called non- party in the case.
“Sprint has not produced a single document,” AT&T said in the filing. “Instead Sprint contends it is not required to comply with the subpoena,” arguing it already turned documents over to the Justice Department during its review of the $ 39 billion merger announced Ma…………… continues on BusinessWeek

AT&T says its new 4G LTE smartphones are thinner and more efficient than Verizon’s, boasting a new technology that may help AT&T compete against Verizon’s much bigger LTE network.
Ralph de la Vega, chief executive of AT&T’s wireless and consumer unit, told CNET the new phones will launch in the fourth quarter. The phones were slightly delayed because the technology was still being developed, but de la Vega said, “We think it’s worth the wait.”
The phones use a circuit-switch fallback, or CSFB, which allows them to run on a 4G network, flipping back to 3G when they are out of an LTE coverage area. De la Vega did not say which manufacturers are making the technology

Sprint and Verizon To Unlock The iPhone 4S For International Travelers
News from Gizmodo:
International travelers who want an iPhone 4S for its global roaming should buy their handset from Sprint or Verizon Wireless. These two carriers will unlock your phone so you can use it with any international rate plan.
It all comes down to the micro-SIM slot and what each carrier is going to do with it. AT&T locks the micro-SIM slot so you can only use the phone on its network. When you travel overseas, you must purchase AT&T’s costly international roaming plans.
Sprint and Verizon, though, use CDMA for their domestic service and the micro-SIM slot for international service only. These two carriers can unlock the micro-SIM card slot and not worry about people jumping ship to another carrier.
Between Sprint and Verizon, Sprint offers the better deal on the iPhone 4S. It’s selling the handset with an unlimited data plan and an unlocked micro-SIM slot. Verizon does not have an unlimited data plan and will unlock your handset, but only after you have been…………… continues on Gizmodo
