Senate moves to ban cell phone surveillance apps
News from RT:

The US Senate Judiciary Committee has agreed to advance a bill that could stop software developers from secretly spying on the locations of users.
A Capitol Hill panel approved last week the Location Privacy Protection Act, a bill drafted by Sen. Al Franken (D-Minnesota) that has been authored in an attempt to keep application programmers from covertly stealing the GPS coordinates of unaware users.
Currently there is little-to-no legislation on the books limiting what developers can do with location data associated with certain activity carried out on smart phones. The makers of some cell phone apps have used that to their advantage in order to sell spy programmers, or “stalker apps,” that track every action of users, often unbeknownst to them.
One application — ePhoneTracker — is profiled this week by the Washington Post in their own write-up of the Location Privacy Protection Act. That program, available as an instant download for only $ 50, lets a monitoring device run silently on cell phones, all the while sending specifics to another person who may suspect that their significant other is acting unfaithfully.
“Concerned about your teen’s recent behavior? Suspect your employees are abusing their company privileges?” asks ePhoneTracker on t…………… continues on RT

Facebook vendor fires yoga teacher Alice Van Ness for stopping student from …
News from New York Daily News:

Yoga instructor Alice Van Ness, left, instructs students Wednesday, July 11, 2012, at Lifestretch Yoga in Milpitas, Calif. A California yoga instructor has been fired for her disapproving stink-eye glare at a Facebook employee using a cellphone in class.
A San Francisco Bay Area yoga instructor didn’t like when a student tapped away on her cell phone during a class at Facebook’s headquarters.
Her request: Put it away.
For that, she told the Daily News on Wednesday, she was fired — an extreme move that has put a spotlight on social manners in the social media age.
“It’s a respect issue,” said Alice Van Ness, 35, who’s been teaching yoga since 2006. “Why are you here, if you don’t want to pay attention?”
Van Ness said she was teaching at the Facebook Fitness Center in Menlo Park last month, when she told the beginners class to turn off cell phones, after seeing a female Facebook employee with hers out.
But in the midst of Van Ness teaching the “half moon pose,” that same student, sitti…………… continues on New York Daily News

More rockets fired at South despite cease-fire reports
News from Jerusalem Post:
Palestinian terrorists continued to launch rockets and mortar shells at southern Israel early Tuesday morning despite a senior Egyptian security official saying that Israel and terrorist factions in the Gaza Strip had agreed to an Egyptian-brokered truce.
The Egyptian security official told Reuters on Tuesday that both sides had “agreed to end the current operations”, with Israel giving an unusual undertaking to “stop assassinations”, and an overall agreement “to begin a comprehensive and mutual calm.”
The agreement was set to take effect at 1 a.m. local time (2300 GMT). There was no immediate comment from either side on the agreement.
Despite the announcement, a mortar shell fired from the Gaza Strip landed in Ashkelon Regional Council early Tuesday morning and a Kassam rocket exploded in open territories near Sha’ar Hanegev Council.
No injuries were reported and no damage was caused.

Djokovic, Sharapova win at Indian Wells
By BETH HARRIS, AP Sports Writer – 9 minutes ago
INDIAN WELLS, Calif. (AP) — Top-ranked Novak Djokovic defeated Kevin Anderson 6-2, 6-3 to reach the fourth round of the BNP Paribas Open on Monday, while American men had mixed results, with No. 8 Mardy Fish and Andy Roddick knocked out and John Isner winning.
Djokovic broke Anderson’s serve once in each set playing in the heat of the day at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden, where he won in 2008 and last year when the Serb claimed three Grand Slam titles and went 70-6. Djokovic successfully defended his Australian Open title to open the year.
Anderson, the 29th seed from South Africa who won last week’s tournament in Delray Beach, Fla., managed one break in the first set. Five games went to deuce, including five deuces before Djokovic held to lead 3-2 in the first. Djokovic beat Anderson in straight sets for the fourth straight time.
“He’s very aggressive on the return games,” Djokovic said. “He has a great serve, as you can imagine for his height, so I had to return well, I had to just be patient, and wait for my chances. I haven’t served well in the opening set, but then it all came down to his service games. Cops: Chris Brown snatched fan’s cellphone outside South Beach’s Cameo
News from MiamiHerald.com:
R&B star Chris Brown is in deep doo-doo today because of Rihanna, the woman he once beat up!
At least, that’s what witnesses told Miami Beach police regarding an alleged robbery on Feb. 19 that could send the With You singer to prison for months, according to a law enforcement source.
Gossip Extra hears that Brown’s fellow rapper Tyga, who was at the scene of the incident, told police Brown got hot under the collar when he saw two female fans snapping his picture on their cellphones. Brown assumed the photos, taken outside Cameo nightclub in South Beach, would end up on the Internet, according to the Gossip Extra report.
Why would that be bad? Because, Tyga told police, Brown was taking two groupies home — not good when one is trying to hook back up with one’s high-profile ex-girlfriend.
Tyga told detectives: “The guy’s trying to get back with Rihanna, and he knows that wouldn’t happen if the photos ended up online,” said the source, who asked to remain anonymous.
Brown pleaded guilty to felony assault in Rihanna’s beating in 2009. He was sentenced in Los Angeles to 1,400 hours of community service and five years probation.
Recently, however, Brown and Rihanna collaborated on two songs, and there a…………… continues on MiamiHerald.com

DC Council renegotiates cellphone contract after $ 61000 in bills
News from Washington Post:
D.C. Council Chairman Kwame R. Brown is trying to slash council spending on cellphones after it racked up $ 61,000 in bills in a little more than a year due to excessive roaming and data charges, according to council records.
As he searches for efficiencies in government, Brown (D) recently concluded that the council was wasting thousands of dollars each month because it had an outdated group rate for members and employees.
Most council members and about 30 senior staff members use government-issued cellphones or BlackBerrys paid for through the council’s $ 19 million annual budget. Over the past 16 months, they spent about $ 61,000 talking, e-mailing and texting, according to the records.
For a majority of council and staff members, monthly bills were no greater than what many consumers pay for basic cellphone service, between $ 50 and $ 75 per month.
But some members’ bills regularly exceeded $ 100 a month, causing the council’s secretary, Nyasha Smith, to renegotiate the council’s contract with AT&T. The move is expected to lower bills by about a third.
“This is about all of us looking at different ways to save money and bringing down the cost of the government,” Brown said. “This is just one small piece . . . but anytime you can save 30 percent, that…………… continues on Washington Post

Cellphone Study Finds Link Between Selfishness And Mobile Phone Use
News from Huffington Post:
Two studies out of the University of Maryland appear to confirm a long-held suspicion about cellphone use: people get selfish when they’re on their phones.
According to a press release, researchers at the University of Maryland’s Robert H. Smith School of Business found that when people are using or thinking about their phones they are less likely to engage in prosocial behavior. The study notes that prosocial behavior is characterized as “action intended to benefit another person or society as a whole.”
In the experiment, college students were asked how likely they were to volunteer at a charity after using either Facebook or a cellphone without access to Facebook. After three minutes, they were asked how likely they were to volunteer at a charity organization. Participants who had used their phones were less likely to say they would volunteer than those who had browsed Facebook immediatel…………… continues on Huffington Post

At South Carolina GOP debate, four survivors spar; Gingrich adds host to the fray
News from Washington Post:
NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. — In an electric debate here Thursday night, Newt Gingrich said it was “despicable” of the news media to raise questions about a previous marriage. Rick Santorum offered himself as the only true conservative in the race and accused two other candidates of “playing footsie with the left.” Mitt Romney said, again, that he would not apologize for being successful in America and that he would release his taxes in April.
Rep. Ron Paul (Tex.) lamented that he sometimes became an afterthought on a stage of only four.
On a day in which Texas Gov. Rick Perry withdrew from the race, Santorum sought to deny Gingrich the mantle of the conservative alternative to Romney, attacking him for his big ideas and accusing him of a lack of follow-through.
“Grandiosity has never been a problem with Newt Gingrich,” said Santorum, a former senator from Pennsylvania. “Newt’s a friend. I love him. But at times, you’ve just got, you know, sort of that, you know, worrisome moment that something’s going to pop. And we can’t afford that in a nominee.”
The debate got off to a combative start as the moderator, CNN’s John King, asked Gingrich to respond to interviews in which his second wife, Marianne, said he asked her to agree to an open marriage while he was having an affair. A defiant Gingrich said “the story is false” and lashed out a…………… continues on Washington Post

Pepperdine shows small progress, losing 61-47 at No. 24 Saint Mary’s
News from Washington Post:
MORAGA, Calif. — Pepperdine coach Marty Wilson is not one for moral victories.
At this point, though, he’ll take any win he can get.
While the season has long since slipped away, Pepperdine’s 61-47 loss at No. 24 Saint Mary’s on Thursday night showed some progress. After all, the Waves (7-11, 1-6 West Coast Conference) lost at home to the Gaels by 29 points not even three weeks ago.
“We’re going to take something out of this,” Wilson said. “We have to. Not playing well, not winning, we have to find all the positives. And they’ll be quite a few at both ends. Our guys competed, our guys stayed together and they executed at both ends.”
Just not enough for a victory.
Rob Jones had 17 points and 10 rebounds and Matthew Dellavedova scored 13 points to lead Saint Mary’s past pesky Pepperdine for its eighth straight victory. The Gaels are a perfect 14-0 at home this season with only four more games left at McKeon Pavilion.
“Our goal is trying to stay undefeated at home,” Jones said. “It hasn’t been done here. So I go into each game thinking about that, with that on our minds. I think it will help motivate us.”
Sure seemed to in this one.
Stephen Holt added 12 points and three assists to help the Gaels (18-2, 7-0) remain the only unbeaten team in the WCC. Saint Mary’s has won 16 of 17 since a loss at No. 3 Bayl…………… continues on Washington Post

Romney put on defense at South Carolina debate, as GOP rivals fight for edge …
News from Fox News:
MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. — A narrowed field of Republican presidential candidates took to the debate stage in South Carolina Monday night, looking to score points ahead of the state’s primary on Jan. 21.
On Monday morning former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman dropped out of the race and endorsed former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney.
That left Romney, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum, Texas Gov. Rick Perry and Texas Rep. Ron Paul taking part in the FOX News/Wall Street Journal debate at Myrtle Beach Convention Center in Myrtle Beach, S.C.
Gingrich, Santorum and Perry are all trying to emerge as the leading alternative to Romney, by winning over the social and religious conservatives who make up a majority of the Republican primary voters in South Carolina.

Louisville rebounds from blowout with close loss at Marquette
News from Washington Post:
MILWAUKEE — Considering what happened last week, No. 23 Louisville’s loss at Marquette counted as a step forward.
Coach Rick Pitino was pleased with the Cardinals’ effort in a 74-63 loss to the 21st-ranked Golden Eagles, especially coming on the heels of a 32-point setback at Providence on Jan. 10.
“I told our guys, ‘Don’t be down. You had a reason to be down after the Providence game because you didn’t give extraordinary effort.,’” Pitino said. “If you’re giving great effort, stick with your goals. Your goals are to win every home game and two road games.
“So, this one got by us. So, now we got to go get Pittsburgh. It’s not going to be an easy game. Pittsburgh is starving for a win.”
Louisville took an early 18-2 lead by hitting 7 of its first 12 shots, including four 3-pointers. But the Cardinals couldn’t close it out.
“When we do make shots like we did in the period, we look great,” he said.
Russ Smith led Louisville with 20 points and Chris Smith added 19 points and 8 rebounds. Chane Behanan had 12 rebounds for Louisville.
“Being one of the older players, you have to realize that this is their home court.” Russ Smith said. “Eventually, they’re going to make a run and get back in the game.
“The Big East is the Big East. You have to win when you can, scrounge for the games. We’ll figure it out.”

Borrowed cellphone slams prison cell shut
News from Los Angeles Times:
Dwayne Kennedy threw a man from a moving car in 1988, but that’s not what’s keeping him in prison today. It’s not the inmate he stabbed 17 years ago either; the state parole board forgave him that.
Instead, California prison officials are keeping Kennedy locked up for an extra five years — costing taxpayers roughly $ 250,000 — because guards caught him with a contraband cellphone he says he borrowed to tell his family he had just been granted parole and was coming home.
It was “just stupid on my part for even using it,” Kennedy told a pair of parole commissioners convened in June 2010 to decide his punishment for breaking prison rules. But “cellphones are just everywhere in prison nowadays…. It’s easy to borrow one from a guy,” Kennedy said.
Indeed, Kennedy’s access to the phone underscores a rapidly growing problem for California corrections officials. Just five years ago, only 261 of the devices turned up behind state prison walls. This year, guards are on pace to seiz…………… continues on Los Angeles Times

Oct. 1 (Bloomberg) — AT&T Inc. urged a court to dismiss Sprint Nextel Corp. and Cellular South Inc. lawsuits alleging its proposed purchase of wireless carrier T-Mobile USA Inc. would be anticompetitive, saying the deal would actually boost competition.
AT&T asked a federal judge in Washington yesterday to throw out the suits, claiming Sprint, the third-biggest U.S. wireless operator, and Cellular South, the ninth-largest wireless carrier by customers, failed to show the deal would hurt competition or impair access to networks needed to serve their customers.
