Jean Harris dies at 89; killer of ‘Scarsdale Diet’ doctor
News from Los Angeles Times:
Jean Harris, the onetime headmistress of an elite girls’ school whose trial in the fatal 1980 shooting of the celebrity diet doctor who jilted her generated front-page headlines and national debates about whether she was a feminist martyr or vengeful murderer, has died. She was 89.
Harris, who spent nearly 12 years in prison for the shooting death of her longtime boyfriend, “Scarsdale Diet” doctor Herman “Hy” Tarnower, died Sunday at an assisted-living facility in New Haven, Conn., of complications related to old age, her son James said.
Convicted in 1981 of second-degree murder, Harris, who had at least two heart attacks in prison, was granted clemency on her 15 years-to-life sentence on Dec. 29, 1992, by then-New York Gov. Mario Cuomo, who cited her health and advancing age.

Mayor steals show at opera house Olympic ceremony
News from MiamiHerald.com:
LONDON – It’s not often that Placido Domingo is upstaged at the Royal Opera House.
Yet flamboyant London Mayor Boris Johnson managed to pull it off at a star-studded Olympic gala on Monday night.
Opera stars Domingo, Renee Fleming and Bryn Terfel were the headline performers at the opening ceremony of the International Olympic Committee session at the famous venue in Covent Garden.
But it was Johnson who brought the house down with his bombastic recital – in ancient Greek – of a Pindaric Ode for the London Games. After the Greek version, he paused and said “which roughly translates as” before reading out the ode in English. It included word plays on the names of Olympic champions, including the “lighting bolt around the track.”
Pindar was an ancient Greek lyric poet famous for his victory odes.
Johnson, who studied classics at Oxford, commissioned the poem for the games. It was written by Oxford academic Armand D’Angour and consists of six verses in rhyming couplets.
Johnson received a huge round of cheers, applause and whistles from the packed theater, a bigger ovation than that received later for Domingo and Terfel’s duet performance of Bellini’s final opera and Fleming’s Puccini aria.

BARCELONA, Spain – Struggling cell phone maker Nokia Corp. has unveiled two new handsets that it hopes will revive its fortunes at the start of the world’s largest mobile phone trade show on Monday.
Chief executive Stephen Elop told reporters at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona that the new phones – a low-price euro189 ($ 254) smartphone that runs on Windows software and a handset with a high-resolution 41 megapixel camera – demonstrates “the actions necessary to improve the fortunes of Nokia.”"With great products for consumers, I think the rest will fall into place,” Elop said.Analysts said the new smartphone could attract users because of its low price but investors sent Nokia shares down more than 5 percent to euro4.10 ($ 5.50) in afternoon trading in Helsinki, erasing a big boost it gained on Friday in anticipation of new announcements at the trade show.Nokia has lost its once-dominant position in the global cell phone market, with handsets running on Google’s Android software and iPhones enjoying booming popularity. The Finnish company is attempting a co…………… continues on Kansas City Star

Cellphone bills totaling $ 61000 prompts DC Council to renegotiate contract to …
News from Washington Post:
WASHINGTON — Members of the D.C. Council and about 30 staff members have spent about $ 61,000 in cellphone bills over the past 16 months because of excessive roaming and data charges.
The Washington Post (http://wapo.st/yqvsBb ) reports D.C. Council Chairman Kwame Brown recently determined the council was wasting thousands of dollars with such charges.
For most, the bills were between $ 50 and $ 75 a month. But some regularly exceeded $ 100 a month.
Council member Muriel Bowser had the highest average bill at about $ 251 per month and topped $ 700 in August. Bowser attributed the charges to international roaming while on vacation. In July, Council member Michael Brown’s bill topped $ 1,000 while he was traveling.
Council Secretary Nyasha Smith has renegotiated the council’s contract with AT&T and expects to cut costs by a third.

Cell phone videos show horrors inside Syria
News from CBS News:
(CBS News)
We’re experiencing one of those times in history when an aging dictatorship hangs on to power by using military force against its own people. For nearly a year we’ve been following the freedom movement in Syria. It appears the dictator Bashir al-Assad is rushing to crush the rebellion before the world can do much about it.
The city of Homs – remember the name – is a little bigger than Philadelphia and it’s been under artillery fire for two weeks. Rebels claim 100 civilians were killed Tuesday alone. The citizens there have been filming the siege on cell phones. The video above shows the sights and sounds of what it’s like to be a citizen of Homs today.
The man shooting the video was saying: “We are being slaughtered. Where are you, all Arabs?”
21 countries of the Arab League have suspended Syria’s membership. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton will be in Tunisia on Friday to meet with representatives of 70 countries to talk about what might be done to stop the killing.

Brain chooses cellphone-listening ear
News from UPI.com:
Published: Feb. 21, 2012 at 5:36 PM
DETROIT, Feb. 21 (UPI) – There is a strong correlation between left/right brain dominance and the ear people choose to listen to a cellphone with, a U.S. study found.
In the study conducted by the Henry Ford Health System in Detroit, more than 70 percent of participants held their cellphones up to the ear on the same side as their dominant hand.
Left brain dominant people — those whose speech and language center is on the left side of the brain — are more likely to use their right hand for writing and other everyday tasks, including holding a cellphone, the study found.
This practice, researchers said, appears illogical since it is challenging to listen on the phone with the right ear and take notes with the right hand.
Similarly, right brain dominant people are more likely to use the left hand to hold the phone, the researchers found.
“Our findings have several implications, especially for mapping the language center of the brain,” Michael Seidman, director of the division of otologic and neurotologic surgery at Henry Ford, said.
The study also may offer additional evidence that cell phone use and brain, and head and neck tumors may not be linked, he said.

News from Christian Science Monitor:
The Pekingese, Malachy, wobbled to across the ring at the Westminster dog show to receive the award for Best in Show.

Moments later, the Pekingese whose smushed-in face frames a mop of flyaway fur and whose pace rivals a snail’s, became America’s top dog by winning best in show at the Westminster Kennel Club.
This little stump of a dog beat out the likes of a Dalmatian, German shepherd, Doberman pinscher, Irish setter, a Kerry blue terrier and wire-haired dachshund. A 4-year-old pompom, Malachy wobbled to his 115th overall be…………… continues on Christian Science Monitor

DALLAS — Whether or not the Nuggets went the smoke-and-mirror approach to generate offense in each of its last two games with a depleted roster, Wednesday night Dallas was having none of whatever was making Denver so successful.
The Nuggets went down meekly to the defending NBA champions 102-84 at the American Airlines Center, their biggest loss of the season with a season-low point total, as they were unable to find multiple sources of offense and barely put up a fight.
The Mavericks were a hungry bunch anyway — the last time the Nuggets were here they were busily blowing Dallas out it in its own building on opening night. The Mavericks were not about to let that happen again.
And without starters

At the Buzzer, It’s All Lin
News from New York Times:
TORONTO — The clock was running down, on the game, on the Knicks and on Jeremy Lin’s mystical streak that was, for a moment, teetering on the edge of disappointment. The seconds kept disappearing until Lin stopped his dribble, pulled up and launched from the arc.
The ball swished with a half-second remaining, setting off pandemonium at Air Canada Centre, which momentarily adopted the N.B.A.’s newest star as its own. The crowd had just witnessed another fantastic chapter in Lin’s growing legend.
The shot gave the Knicks a 90-87 lead, completing a furious comeback and extending their Lin-inspired winning streak to six.
This was not Lin’s best night, to be sure. He forced a lot of shots, was 9 for 20 from the field, committed eight turnovers and struggled to contain Jose Calderon. But the night ended as so many have since Lin became the Knicks’ unlikely star — with giddy e…………… continues on New York Times
