Milt Campbell dies at 78; Olympic gold medalist in the decathlon
News from Los Angeles Times:

Milt Campbell, a versatile athlete who became the first African American to win a gold medal in the Olympic decathlon, besting then-world record holder Rafer Johnson at the 1956 Melbourne Summer Games, has died. He was 78.

Campbell, who went on to play professional football before spending the rest of his career as a motivational speaker, died Friday at his home in Gainesville, Ga., his family said. He had been battling cancer and diabetes.

A three-sport standout in football, swimming and track at Plainfield High School in New Jersey, Campbell had already established himself as a world-class high hurdler when he arrived in Los Angeles for the 1952 U.S. Olympic track and field trials at the Coliseum. He lost a spot on the team when he tripped on a hurdle but a few days later in Tulare, Calif., competing in the decathlon for the first time, he finished third in that event. He went to the Helsinki Games as the only high school athlete on the U.S. team and at 18 won a silver medal in the decathlon, finishing second to Tulare’s own Bob Mathias.

Mayor steals show at opera house Olympic ceremony
News from MiamiHerald.com:

It’s not often that Placido Domingo is upstaged at the Royal Opera House.

Yet flamboyant London Mayor Boris Johnson managed to pull it off at a star-studded Olympic gala on Monday night.

Opera stars Domingo, Renee Fleming and Bryn Terfel were the headline performers at the opening ceremony of the International Olympic Committee session at the famous venue in Covent Garden.

But it was Johnson who brought the house down with his bombastic recital – in ancient Greek – of a Pindaric Ode for the London Games. After the Greek version, he paused and said “which roughly translates as” before reading out the ode in English. It included word plays on the names of Olympic champions, including the “lighting bolt around the track.”

Pindar was an ancient Greek lyric poet famous for his victory odes.

Johnson, who studied classics at Oxford, commissioned the poem for the games. It was written by Oxford academic Armand D’Angour and consists of six verses in rhyming couplets.

Johnson received a huge round of cheers, applause and whistles from the packed theater, a bigger ovation than that received later for Domingo and Terfel’s duet performance of Bellini’s final opera and Fleming’s Puccini aria.

Serena wins at Stanford in final Olympic tuneup
News from Yahoo! Sports:

STANFORD, Calif. (AP) — Serena Williams has spent most of her career matching — and often breaking — older sister Venus’ records. After tying Venus for the most WTA Tour titles among active players, there’s little left for her to equal.

Except Olympic gold.

Williams overcame a shaky start and two service breaks to beat lucky loser Coco Vandeweghe 7-5, 6-3 Sunday for her second straight Bank of the West Classic title in a final tuneup before the London Olympics.

Serena and Venus won gold in doubles in 2000 and 2008 and will go for a third again this year when play begins July 28 on Wimbledon’s grass. While Venus took home gold in singles in 2000, Serena has never medaled on her own.

“It would mean a lot to me, but I can’t lay all my hopes and dreams on just that,” she said. “But it would mean a lot. I would like to try to get one.”

Sustaining the moment has been a big reason behind Williams’ busy schedule.

Eight days after winning Wimbledon, Williams saved a set point and won the final four games of the opening set. It was the 43rd WTA Tour championship of Williams’ career, tying older sister Venus for the most…………… continues on Yahoo! Sports

SAN DIEGO — More than 24 hours after arriving in town for Comic-Con International, movie producer Daniel Alter had an admission: He hadn’t actually been to the Con.

“The truth is that for industry people, there are so many great parties that you don’t have to go to the convention center anymore,” said Alter, chatting at an exclusive rooftop bar with a drink in his hand and a VIP pass around his neck.

Most know Comic-Con as the jampacked geekfest where 130,000 fans wait in long lines to see movie, TV, video game and comic book presentations at the San Diego Convention Center and listen as their favorite stars repeatedly say things like “Without you guys, the show would not exist,” as “The Walking Dead’s” Andrew Lincoln told the enthusiastic crowd during the panel for the hit AMC television series.
