Man caught using own cell phone in robbery
News from The Advocate:

STAMFORD — A city man was arraigned Monday on charges of robbing a Chinese food delivery driver on the East Side in early January after police traced the take-out call to a cell phone the man used to call police for help just a day earlier.

Colhose Lucien, 350 Cove Road, Stamford, was charged with first-degree robbery, conspiracy to commit armed robbery, carrying a pistol without a permit, possession of a controlled substance, possession of a controlled substance with intent to sell, possession of a controlled substance within 1,500 feet of a school and operating a drug factory.

Stamford courthouse Judge Kenneth Povodator decided Lucien would be held in lieu of $ 132,500 bond. Lucien has not made a plea in the cases, which were transferred to the Part A docket, where the most serious cases are decided.

According to his four-page arrest warrant, Lucien became a suspect after police realized the same cell phone used to lure a China King delivery driver to a robbery on Warren Street had been used to call police on two occasions.

Police saw that late Jan. 6, a phone with a Metro PCS phone number of 203-818-5265 was used to order takeout from China King. The driver called the same number to let the customer know he was in the neighborhood and was told to drive to the rear of 79 Warren Street to make the delivery. He was promptly robbed…………… continues on The Advocate

Nokia: Q4 mobile phone sales beat own forecast
News from U.S. News & World Report:

By MATTI HUUHTANEN, Associated Press

HELSINKI (AP) — Nokia Corp. signaled Thursday its smartphone partnership with Microsoft was starting to reap rewards as it revealed that fourth-quarter mobile phone sales exceeded expectations and that its handset business would return to profitability.

The Finnish company’s share price surged 11 percent to close at €3.32 on Helsinki Stock Exchange.

Nokia said it sold 86 million devices in the last three months of 2012, including some 4.5 million Lumia smartphones, while revenues amounted to some €3.9 billion. A year earlier, it posted a fourth-quarter net loss of €1 billion with a 19-percent plunge in revenue.

The cellphone maker said it sold 15.9 million smartphones in the quarter, up from 6.3 million in the previous quarter.

Nokia has been struggling in the fierce top-end race against Apple Inc. and Samsung and is now also losing ground to Asian makers in lower-end devices. Samsung overtook it as the world’s No. 1 cellphone maker early last year after Nokia led the field for 14 years. In 2011, Nokia announced that it would join forces with Microsoft to produce a smartphone that would run on Windows software. The latest Windows handset, the Lumia was launched last year.

CEO Stephen Elop said he was pleased with the company’s “solid” fourth-quarter…………… continues on U.S. News & World Report

Unlocked Cell Phones Helping Consumers Avoid Major Mobile Drawbacks

Unlocked Cell Phones Helping Consumers Avoid Major Mobile Drawbacks
News from San Francisco Chronicle:

Presented by:

The battle for control over mobile consumers is shifting in a major way as consumers purchase unlocked devices allowing cell phone carriers to once again woo consumers into making purchase based on their cell phone carrier and not just their device. Carriers like T-Mobile are beginning to exploit this trend by showcasing the benefits to owning unlocked cell phones, something that would have been unheard of for a Carrier as large as T-Mobile to do in the past. Not only does it give consumers the ability to choose whatever phone they want on whatever carrier they want, but it also, in many cases, costs less to buy an unlocked cell phone. Thrifty mobile users can also avoid being tied down to a specific contract. Certain phones are only affordable when purchased with one- or two-year contracts from certain carriers so consumers can be torn – do they stick with the phone they want or the carrier they like? With an unlocked cell phone, they don’t have to choose. They can have exactly what they want. There are even companies like Global Unlock whose entire purp…………… continues on San Francisco Chronicle

Mobile phones pinpoint traffic gridlock

Mobile phones pinpoint traffic gridlock
News from Futurity: Research News:

Canceling or delaying the trips of 1 percent of all drivers across a road network would reduce delays caused by congestion by about 3 percent. But canceling the trips of 1 percent of drivers from selected neighborhoods would reduce the extra travel time for all other drivers by as much as 18 percent. (Credit: K2D2vaca/Flickr)

UC BERKELEY (US) — Cellphone and GPS data suggest that reducing a little traffic from key commuter areas could go a long way toward easing highway congestion.

Asking all commuters to cut back on rush-hour driving may reduce traffic tie-ups to some extent, but asking specific groups of drivers to stay off the road at certain times may work even better, new research shows.

Scientists say this is the first large-scale traffic study to use anonymous cellphone data rather than survey data or information obtained from US Census Bureau travel diaries.

In 2007, congestion on US roads was responsible for 4.2 billion hours o…………… continues on Futurity: Research News

Mobile phone behavior depends a lot on your age

Mobile phone behavior depends a lot on your age
News from Daily Democrat:

NEW YORK — Your cell phone habits and behaviors depend largely on how old you are, a study released Friday by the Pew Research Center’s Internet and American Life Project says.

Some 85 percent of Americans have cell phones, about half of them smartphones, according to Pew’s survey of 2,254 adults last spring. More than a third of respondents said they “couldn’t live without” their phones. But based on age, cell phone users value different things about the devices.

Americans under 40 were more likely to mention access to the Internet, email and text messaging as cell-phone qualities they prize. Older Americans said they primarily like that mobile phones are convenient and helpful in an emergency. Aaron Smith, the study’s author, says it’s striking that 20-year-olds and 40-year-olds report similar attachment to the technology.

“They have similar demands in terms of what’s required of them in this world where people can reach them at all times, despite being in very different places in their lives,” Smith said. “If you’re someone in college, it’s probably your buddy wondering why you’re not at the party, or your study partner wondering where you are. Whereas if you’re in your mid-40s, maybe it’s a spouse or a child.”

Compared with older cell phone owners, younger people also reported different rules of etiquette attached to phone us…………… continues on Daily Democrat

EXCLUSIVE

Chris Brown will not be prosecuted for allegedly snatching a cell phone from a female clubgoer outside of a Miami nightclub back in February … TMZ has learned.

We broke the story … a police report was filed against Brown for “robbery by sudden snatching” after he allegedly grabbed an iPhone from a woman outside Cameo nightclub and said, “Bitch, you ain’t going to put that on no website.”

But after a thorough investigation, the Miami-Dade State Attorney tells TMZ … “The Miami Beach Police Department and my prosecutors have reviewed all of the evidence and taken the statements of numerous witnesses, many of whom were interviewed in California, and have determined we are not taking any type of criminal action regarding the incident.”

“We have forwarded our findings to Los Angeles for the probation case review after conducting the same process that every criminal case in Miami-Dade County undergoes.”

Officials say the rapper Tyga was interviewed as a witness in the case — because the phone ultimately ended up in the hands of Devon Blanche — the head of Tyga’s security team.

According to police, Blanche told investigators, “Brown may have taken [the phone] because Brown is known to be especially concerned that if photographs of himself with two females…………… continues on Off the Hook in Cell Phone Snatching Case – TMZ.com

Mobile phone addiction is like compulsive shopping, study says
News from Boston.com:

(Relaxnews)—”Cell phones are a part of our consumer culture,” says study author Dr. James Roberts, marketing professor at Baylor University. “They are not just a consumer tool, but are used as a status symbol. They’re also eroding our personal relationships.” The research—which relied on self-reports from nearly 200 business students at two US universities—is said to be the first of its kind to investigate the role materialism plays in mobile phone addiction.

“At first glance, one might have the tendency to dismiss such aberrant cell phone use as merely youthful nonsense—a passing fad,” Roberts says. “But an emerging body of literature has given increasing credence to cell phone addiction and similar behavioral addictions.” As mobile phones possess an “ever-expanding array of functions,” he says, their overuse seems increasingly likely.

Chris Brown won’t be charged after cellphone-snatching accusation
News from Los Angeles Times:

Rihanna is keeping all her fans update on her time with reported “friend” Chris Brown. She posted a photo on Twitter of the two embracing with the comment that she doesn’t want to leave. The picture has her followers divided on this romance.

Chris Brown won’t be charged in a “robbery by sudden snatching” case from February, in which he was accused of taking a woman’s cellphone after she tried to snap a picture of him as he left a Miami nightclub in a black Bentley.

No evidence was found that Brown intended to steal the phone or deleted any photos, one of which would be needed to make a case for robbery or theft, according to a memo released Friday by the Miami-Dade County state attorney.

The phone — which was snatched or dropped in Brown’s ride before it was tossed out the window, depending on which of the many witnesses’ stories are to be believed — ultimately wound up in the possession of Devon Blanche, the head of security for Tyga, another rapper who had just performed with Brown at the Cameo club in Miami and was also leaving.

Cell Phones and Cancer: The Debate Enters the Courtroom
News from Mobiledia:

Scientists and doctors argue over the link between cell phones and cancer, but now courts are weighing in on the matter, which may open the door for future lawsuits.

In Brief boils down complex events to give you the heart of the matter — today and what it means for tomorrow — clearly and simply.

If you’ve ever used a cell phone, the ongoing debate between the medical community and public opinion may have you worried you’re pointing a loaded weapon at your brain every time you make a call.

Information from the medical and scientific community is contradictory on the matter. Some studies say there is a link, others don’t, and the back-and-forth does little to address the concerns of millions of mobile phone users.

In lieu of definitive data, courts are stepping in to offer their own conclusions, adding yet another wrinkle to an already tangled debate.

What Happened: Just last week, Italy’s top court found a “causal link” between a businessman’s cell phone use and his brain cancer.

Advertising Relearned for Mobile
News from New York Times:

SAN FRANCISCO — Say you are in a strange city and need a hotel for the night. You pull out your phone, search for hotels on Google and see a nearby one listed at the top of the rankings, with a little phone icon that says, “Call.” You tap it, reach the hotel and ask for a room.

And just like that, Google made money. That icon was a so-called click-to-call ad, and the hotel paid Google for it when you called.

As more of us have access to the Internet and apps through our cellphones and tablets, advertisers are looking for new ways to reach us there.

Some mobile ads remain just miniature versions of ads on Web sites, an echo of the early days of the Internet, when advertisers essentially slapped print ads online. But increasingly, advertisers are tailoring ads to phones by taking advantage of elements like their ability to track location, make a call, sh…………… continues on New York Times

Law bans cell phone use for young drivers
News from UWM Post:

Beginning Nov. 1, 2012, young drivers will no longer be able to use cell phones while driving in Wisconsin. A new law makes it illegal for drivers with an instruction permit or probationary license to use a cell phone while operating a motor vehicle, except in case of an emergency.

Violation will result in a fine of $ 20-$ 40 for a first-time offense and $ 50-$ 100 for a second or subsequent offense.

The Assembly Bill 291 was introduced last September, and was enacted into law by the governor on April 11, 2012.

Eight members of the Assembly and three members of the Senate authored the bill. It passed through the Assembly unanimously, and the State Senate voted in favor of waiving a public hearing 3-2.

Out of the 15 committee members, 12 voted in favor of passing the bill, and two members did not vote due to absence. The two groups who registered in favor of passing the bill were AAA Wisconsin and the Wisconsin Insurance Alliance.

Assembly Representative Jerry Petrowski said the bill was a proposed inclusion to the graduated drivers license stipulations that are already implemented.

“The whole goal behind the graduated drivers license is to give young drivers the opportunity to develop good driving skills, good habits if you will,” Petrowski said.

Suspension of mobile phone service helped prevent attacks in Pakistan

Suspension of mobile phone service helped prevent attacks in Pakistan
News from Examiner.com:

Cellphone service was shut down for a time in Pakistan, in order to prevent terrorist attacks, say officials.

The services were suspended from 6am to 10am in the light of information from intelligence agencies and provincial governments over “threats to national security” on the first day of Eid.

Terrorists have long used cellular phones to trigger improvised explosive devices (IEDs).
The remote-control IED is terrorists’ first choice of bomb today because they’re so easy to construct and deploy. Bombers use the cell phone as a typical remote control: to send a signal via radio airwaves. The signal energizes a relay connected to a blasting cap, which then detonates the explosive material or IED.

The suspension was not countrywide but was partial and in cities and pockets considered sensitive.

“Earlier on Friday, television channels had quoted their sources as saying the suspension order applied to three cities of Sindh (

Your smartphone — it’s your social life, your workplace and your entertainment all in one. A new study says it’s also a festering cesspit of bacteria.

That’s right, the phone that goes with you into subways, public bathrooms and gyms — and then spends most of its time cozying up to your ears, nose and mouth — is far from clean, according to an investigation by the Wall Street Journal.

Tests of eight random mobile phones from a Chicago office found “abnormally high numbers of coliforms, a bacteria indicating fecal contamination,” reports the WSJ, with about 2,700 to 4,200 units of the bacteria on each phone. (Drinking water is supposed to have less than 1 unit of the bacteria per half cup.)
