Auto makers call for cooperation with cellphone developers to fight distracted …
News from Washington Post:
Your apps and your automobile need to work together to minimize driving distractions, carmakers said Tuesday, appealing to the likes of Apple and Google to join them in tackling the problem.
Unless mobile communication devices are integrated into vehicle systems designed to minimize their potential distraction, drivers who want instant access to the data they provide will allow their eyes to stray from the road, said Robert Strassburger, vice president for safety at the Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers.
“We need to have all the parties at the table,” Strassburger said during testimony at day-long hearing on distracted driving hosted by the National Transportation Safety Board on Tuesday.

Chapel Hill bans cell-phone use while driving
News from Charlotte Observer:
CHAPEL HILL Talking on a cell phone while driving in Chapel Hill becomes illegal June 1.
The town became the first in the nation to pass an ordinance outlawing talking on both hand-held and hands-free cell phones while driving. After two years of discussion on the issue, the council voted 5-4 Monday night.
Mayor Mark Kleinschmidt and council members Gene Pease, Laurin Easthom and Matt Czajkowski opposed the measure.
The council deadlocked 4-4 on the ban earlier this month. It required a second reading Monday night. Council member Ed Harrison, who was absent during the first reading, cast the deciding vote.
Harrison, an avid cyclist, said much of the odd driving he encounters is caused by people distracted by talking on a cell phone.
“[It] is not by people who are eating things or combing their hair or putting on lipstick,” he said. “It’s by people who are talking on a cell phone and not seeing me.”
The ordinance applies to all streets town-wide, including state-owned roads. Drivers would be allowed to make emergency calls, and calls with a spouse, parent or child. Violators will be fined $ 25.
Council member Donna Bell said the ban is a good first step in continuing a conversation about driving safety. She said she hopes the General Assembly will soon follow with a statewide law.
“I wish that this was broader, but…………… continues on Charlotte Observer

Cellphone makers can expect poor reception in 2012
News from Reuters:

(Reuters) – Cellphone makers are set to struggle with slow sales growth this year as a weaker global economy discourages consumers from replacing older handsets.
Fourth-quarter results are likely to show the slowdown under way. Apple’s long-awaited iPhone 4S and Samsung Electronics’ new, broad offering were likely the exceptions in an otherwise lackluster Christmas holiday season.
“The blowout quarter that Apple will report will show they are still the one to beat, while in the Android (operating system) camp … only a strong brand like Samsung can stand out,” said Gartner analyst Carolina Milanesi.
Apple, ousted as the world’s top smartphone maker by Samsung in the third quarter, could regain the No. 1 spot as consumers rush to buy the latest iPhone. It had been 16 months since the previous model went on sale.

Our View: Cell phone bill veto erodes rights
News from Merced Sun-Star:
With relatively little fanfare, Gov. Jerry Brown gave law enforcement more access to all of the data in your smart phone and weakened your rights under the Fourth Amendment.
Earlier this year, the California Supreme Court ruled in People vs. Diaz that a law enforcement officer had the right to search the cell phone — without a search warrant — of a man suspected of selling drugs. In their ruling, they likened the activity to that of searching a pack of cigarettes that a suspect might be carrying at the time of his arrest.
This ruling, which greatly puts in jeopardy personal privacy, is clear evidence that the Supreme Court is unclear on the ubiquitous nature of personal smart phones and the data held therein.
In an attempt to overturn this ruling, Senate Bill 914 was introduced — and approved by the Senate and Assembly in majority bipartisan votes — by Sen…………… continues on Merced Sun-Star
