Cellphone Vibrators Draw Bond Investors Avoiding Sony Losses
News from Businessweek:
Japan’s top-rated electronics companies are tapping the lowest borrowing costs in 15 months even as bond investors shun flagship issuers including Panasonic Corp. (6752) and Sony Corp. (6758)
Nidec Corp. (6594), the world’s biggest maker of hard-disk drive motors, paid less than half the spread of Japanese corporates in its first sale of non-convertible bonds last week, while copier maker Fujifilm Holdings Corp. (4901) also plans a debut. Yield premiums on companies rated AA- to AA+ have narrowed four basis points since September to 31 basis points, the least since August 2011, Bank of America Merrill Lynch indexes show. The average on Japanese corporate debt rose 6 to 49 during the period, while that globally narrowed 14 to 158.
Component makers such as Nidec, which also supplies camera shutters and vibrators for smartphones, are able to remain profitable even as Apple Inc. and Samsung Electronics Co. unseat Japanese companies as leaders in consumer electronics. By contrast, Panasonic, whose plasma TVs and appliances symbolized the country’s economic prowess, was downgraded by Standard & Poor’s and Moody’s Investors Service by three levels this year.
“Consumer electronics makers are struggling because of the decline in the global competitiveness and strong yen, but business-to-business companies have been stable,” Yasuaki Kudam…………… continues on Businessweek

Somerville shooter showed cellphone video of argument to police
News from Boston Globe:
SOMERVILLE — A man accused of shooting another man outside his parents’ three-family home on Broadway took a cellphone video that prosecutors say shows he escalated an argument that led to the shooting.
Santano Dessin, 33, of 169 Broadway, was ordered held without bail by Judge Maurice Flynn during an arraignment Tuesday morning in Somerville District Court. Flynn approved a motion by prosecutors to seal the case file pending a dangerousness hearing in Somerville District Court on Friday.
Dessin is accused of shooting a 28-year-old Somerville man in the neck during an argument with the victim and two other men, one a tenant of his family’s home, at about 11:30 p.m. Sunday.
The victim, whose name was not released, remains in Massachusetts General Hospital with critical injuries, Stephanie Guyotte, a spokeswoman for the district attorney, said Tuesday.
Dessin’s attorney, Cheryl McGillivray, sought to have Dessin released on personal recognizance, arguing he acted in self defense. Dessin is charged with assault with intent to murder, assault and battery causing serious bodily injury, and discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a dwelling.
He turned himself in to police Sunday night and showed them a video that he believed proved he acted in self defense, Assistant District Attorney Lila Palmer said. But detectives who reviewed the vide…………… continues on Boston Globe

Verizon Employees Ending Strike May Help Carrier Mitigate Losses
News from Bloomberg:
Verizon Communications Inc. (VZ) said 45,000 striking workers will begin returning to the job tonight while talks continue, a truce that may help the carrier avoid losses a prolonged walkout would have caused.
Employees are returning while the two sides keep negotiating what the company called “major issues.” Benefits, work flexibility and job security are among the matters that still need to be negotiated, Verizon said Aug. 20. Contracts that expired on Aug. 6 will remain in effect for an undefined period, Verizon said.
“This is going to take time, that’s why there was no set deadline,” Peter Thonis, a spokesman for New York-based Verizon, said in a phone interview. “We will be meeting again very soon……………. continues on Bloomberg

AT&T acquisition of T-Mobile may mean more regulation
News from Peninsula On-line:
By Sara Forden & Jeff Bliss
AT&T Inc’s pursuit of U.S. government approval for its proposed $ 39bn purchase of T- Mobile USA may lead to more regulation for the telecommunications industry. If the Federal Communications Commission and the Justice Department sign off on the transaction, they could require AT&T and Verizon Wireless to keep prices from rising, said Carl Howe, an analyst at Yankee Group, a Boston-based research firm.
Regulators also might create a new mobile service provider by combining smaller competitors or requiring the combined AT&T- T-Mobile to sell part of its customer base to a mobile virtual network operator such as TracFone Wireless or Tru, according to a Yankee Group report.
“Once you have a monopoly, you have pricing power, you need rules,” Howe, the report’s co-author, said in an interview. Without more regulation, “your choice is lawlessness.” “The wireless marketplace is intensely competitive today, and it will remain c…………… continues on Peninsula On-line
