Many of the numbers were good as Apple beat Wall Street’s expectations for the most recent quarter — but said it won’t for the next one.
(Credit: James Martin/CNET)
Apple surprised Wall Street today with stronger than expected earnings in its second quarter, though the company came up short in its estimates for the next one.
Apple reported earnings of $ 9.5 billion on $ 43.6 billion in sales. That was right on target with the $ 9.5 billion in profit and just barely above the $ 42.3 billion in sales that Wall Street expected. It was also above Apple’s own expectations, which were between $ 9.23 and $ 10.23 per share on sales of $ 41 billion to $ 43 billion.
By comparison, Apple tallied up a higher $ 11.6 billion in profit on sales of $ 39.2 billion during the same quarter last year. That was fueled by iPhone and continues on CNET

Cell phone study: iPhone 2G most toxic
News from WOWK:
The Ann Arbor-based Ecology Center released data Wednesday from a cell phone toxicity study that ranked the Motorola Citrus as the least toxic phone on the market — and the iPhone 2G as the most toxic.
The study came from a collaboration between the Ecology Center and ifixit.com. The full report is at www.HealthyStuff.org and www.ifixit.com, according to WOWK’s sister station in Detroit.
The Motorola Citrus’ least toxic ranking was followed by the iPhone 4S and the LG Remarq. The new iPhone 5 ranked 5th, better than its primary competitor, Samsung’s Galaxy S III, which ranked 9th.
But every one of the 36 phones sampled contained at least one of following hazardous chemicals: lead, bromine, chlorine, mercury and cadmium, the study found.
“These hazardous substances can pollute throughout a product’s life cycle, including when the minerals are extracted; when they are processed; during phonemanufacturing; and at the end of the phone’s useful life,” the Ecology Center said in…………… continues on WOWK

Workers at Foxconn’s Zhengzhou factory strike in reaction to new iPhone 5 …
News from Engadget:
Unbox that shiny new iPhone 5 only to find it marred with scratches and blemishes? Good news: Apple is asking Foxconn to adhere to stricter quality demands for its flagship handset. Not so great news: workers at the firm’s Zhengzhou factory are striking over the demands. According to China Labor Watch, three to four thousand workers stepped off the production line to protest the new standards, which only allow for a 0.02mm appearance defect. “it’s tough under such stringent quality requirements,” writes Sina Weibo user and Foxconn employee Yefudao. “A 0.02mm appearance defect is already beyond that of our vision. With such a demanding task, worker mental pressure becomes so immense that they have to vent it.”
China Labor Watch reports that the issue stems not only from the higher quality demands, but the fact that workers are being asked to meet them without receiving the training necessary to do so. The situation hasn’t broken out into a riot, but a dispute between li…………… continues on Engadget

Three Cell Phone Users, Three Views on New iPhone 5
News from WSET:
Lynchburg, VA – Preorders are rolling in for the new iPhone 5. AT&T says it hit a sales record with the sleek new phone on Monday.
AT&T says customers ordered more iPhones from AT&T than any earlier model. That includes the first day of preorders and this weekend.
We wanted to know what phone users think of Apple’s newest product.
Meet three different cell phone customers: Lisa Revely – a brand new iPhone user; Paul McLinden – an Android customer, but fan of the Apple brand; and Pierre Mortemousque – a loyal iPhone user looking to get his hands on the newest cell phone.
“I bought two – one for me, one for my son,” said Mortemousque.
Mortemousque one of many customers preordering the iPhone 5. AT&T has not released how many customers are on the waiting list. But, they aren’t shy about its features – thinner and lighter than the iPhone 4, the 5 has a 4-inch screen and longer battery life.
“I wouldn’t say I’m going to go camp outside the store, but if it’s convenient and I can preorder it. Just because you only live once, and why not try the new things,” said Mortemousque.
“What else could they add to it?” said Lisa Revely.
Revely says you’ll never find her camping for a cell phone either. Her daughter is the reason for her Apple.
“Well, my daughter, she’s decided to get my an…………… continues on WSET

First mammalian ‘cell phone’
News from Phys.Org:
Researchers from ETH Zurich designed a “cell phone” made of biological components. A “therapeutical call” halts the pathological formation of new blood vessels. Credit: Andrea Lingk / ETH Zurich
(Phys.org)—Researchers from ETH Zurich have quite literally created a “cell phone”: they have reprogrammed mammalian cells in such a way that they can “phone” each other via chemical signals.
Telephoning is a mutual exchange of information: A phones B and they both agree what B should do. Once this is done, Party B phones Party A to let him or her know. A no longer phones B. During this two-way communication, electrical signals are sent, and for their transmission suitable devices are necessary.
Based on this formula, a team of bioengineers headed by Martin Fussenegger and Jörg Stelling at ETH Zurich’s Department of Biosystems Science and Engineering in Basel has programmed mammalian cells in such a way that two cells can communicate via chemical signals. The scientists have thus incorporated a synthetic two-way communication system into mammalian cells for the first time that also resp…………… continues on Phys.Org

Apple IPhone Sells Out Pre-Orders at AT&T, Verizon, Sprint
News from BusinessWeek:
October 13, 2011, 5:08 PM EDT
By Scott Moritz
(Updates stock prices in sixth paragraph.)
Oct. 13 (Bloomberg) — Apple Inc.’s newest iPhone sold out for pre-order at AT&T Inc., Verizon Wireless and Sprint Nextel Corp. a day before the device officially goes on sale, according to the carriers’ websites.
Verizon Wireless, the largest U.S. wireless operator, and Sprint, the third-biggest, showed no immediate stock of iPhone 4S 16-gigabyte models for pre-order on their websites. AT&T, the No. 2 carrier, is giving buyers on its site a delivery estimate of three to four weeks, up from one to two days when pre-orders began Oct. 7.
The smartphone is for the first time being made available simultaneously at all three of the largest U.S. carriers, helping to boost appeal amid a weak economy. Positive reviews and signs of robust demand for the de…………… continues on BusinessWeek

AT&T Touts Slimmer LTE Phones

AT&T says its new 4G LTE smartphones are thinner and more efficient than Verizon’s, boasting a new technology that may help AT&T compete against Verizon’s much bigger LTE network.
Ralph de la Vega, chief executive of AT&T’s wireless and consumer unit, told CNET the new phones will launch in the fourth quarter. The phones were slightly delayed because the technology was still being developed, but de la Vega said, “We think it’s worth the wait.”
The phones use a circuit-switch fallback, or CSFB, which allows them to run on a 4G network, flipping back to 3G when they are out of an LTE coverage area. De la Vega did not say which manufacturers are making the technology

Sprint and Verizon To Unlock The iPhone 4S For International Travelers
News from Gizmodo:
International travelers who want an iPhone 4S for its global roaming should buy their handset from Sprint or Verizon Wireless. These two carriers will unlock your phone so you can use it with any international rate plan.
It all comes down to the micro-SIM slot and what each carrier is going to do with it. AT&T locks the micro-SIM slot so you can only use the phone on its network. When you travel overseas, you must purchase AT&T’s costly international roaming plans.
Sprint and Verizon, though, use CDMA for their domestic service and the micro-SIM slot for international service only. These two carriers can unlock the micro-SIM card slot and not worry about people jumping ship to another carrier.
Between Sprint and Verizon, Sprint offers the better deal on the iPhone 4S. It’s selling the handset with an unlimited data plan and an unlocked micro-SIM slot. Verizon does not have an unlimited data plan and will unlock your handset, but only after you have been…………… continues on Gizmodo

News from msnbc.com:

All iPhone 4Ses are equal, but some iPhone 4Ses are more equal than others.
This is the Orwellian approach that AT&T will be taking with Apple‘s latest and greatest iPhone iteration. The wireless carrier will try to differentiate its offering from key rivals Verizon and Sprint Nextel by claiming that its model will boast higher data speeds. The most interesting fact? Its claims are actually theoretically accurate.
The iPhone 4S models will actually be the same, but the difference lies in AT&T’s network architecture. The iPhone 4S was built to support a technology called high-speed downlink p…………… continues on msnbc.com

Oct. 7 (Bloomberg) — Sprint Nextel Corp. and Cellular South Inc. asked a federal judge to reject AT&T Inc.’s bid to dismiss their lawsuits opposing its purchase of wireless carrier T-Mobile USA Inc., arguing antitrust law allows them to challenge the merger because of its effects on competition.
The companies filed their opposition to AT&T’s motion to dismiss today in federal court in Washington. AT&T argued that since companies are competitors, not consumers, they lack the right to bring an antitrust case.
