An inside look at Royal, UT’s class act
News from Houston Chronicle:
You can begin with the name – Darrell Royal – an elegant name, with the suggestion of a crown and a flag and a drum roll. But that wasn’t the Royal many of us knew. He was humble, folksy, witty, proud, wildly successful and sometimes insecure.
He came along in a more romantic time before tweets and pixels and Bluetooth, whatever that is. High definition meant you had done a really good job of explaining the sense of a word.
This is awkward because writers rarely want to reveal or exploit a relationship with the public people they covered and wrote about in good times or lean. But Royal, whose death Wednesday was a deeply sad and nostalgic event, surfaced in Texas in 1957 as the new football coach of a hapless Longhorn team.
“You don’t lose nine games and inherit a warm bed,” he said with the turn of a…………… continues on Houston Chronicle

Gabrielle Giffords at killer’s sentencing
News from San Francisco Chronicle:
Tucson –
- Gabrielle Giffords limped to the front of the courtroom and stared silently Thursday as she came face-to-face for the first time with the man who tried to kill her.
The former congresswoman hadn’t been near Jared Lee Loughner since the deadly rampage that killed six people and left her partially blind, with a paralyzed right arm and brain injury.
Giffords’ astronaut husband told Loughner, who showed no emotion, what Giffords couldn’t.
“Mr. Loughner, you may have put a bullet through her head, but you haven’t put a dent in her spirit and her commitment to make the world a better place,”

‘Hard Knocks’ provides inside look at Chad Johnson’s release
News from USA TODAY:
Chad Johnson knew his “death penalty” was coming, and his execution as a member of the Miami Dolphins was thoroughly documented in what was arguably the most compelling episode in the history of HBO’s Hard Knocks.
Like so many events at the London Olympics, viewers have long known the outcome of Tuesday night’s episode after learning of Johnson’s arrest over the weekend for allegedly head-butting his wife, Evelyn Lozada, which led to his subsequent release from the team.
NFL Films got the entirety of his final conversation with Dolphins Head Coach Joe Philbin in his office Sunday night. The camera angle showed the men as they spoke one-on-one and included close-ups of Johnson’s face as he processed his firing:
Johnson: “I let you down a little bit. A lot. I understand what you’re doing, you got the message across clear the first day we met. … I understood what you wanted from me and what you expected out of me, especially after our talk — having fun with the media thing. I apologize for embarrassing you, this organization, my teammates.”
Philbin: “I appreciate that……………. continues on USA TODAY

Bumgarner shines again at home; Giants top Nats
News from Fox News:
San Francisco, CA – It has been a sparkling turnaround for Madison Bumgarner at AT&T Park.
Bumgarner hurled the second complete game of his career as the San Francisco Giants downed the Washington Nationals, 6-1, in the middle test of a three- game set.
Bumgarner (13-7) surrendered a run on five hits and one walk while fanning six. He is 8-1 in 11 assignments at AT&T Park this year and lowered his ERA to an NL-leading 1.87 at home.
“It started with him with the job he did,” Giants manager Bruce Bochy said. “We needed a well-pitched game and he’s as good as anybody.”
The 23-year-old sidewinding left-hander, who was 1-8 with a 5.02 ERA over his first 16 starts in San Francisco, has gone 16-2 with a minuscule 1.84 ERA over his last 21 home tilts.
“He stays out of the middle of the plate, that’s what he does really good,” Nationals manager Davey Johnson said.
Brandon Belt tallied three hits and had his seventh career three-RBI game for the Giants, who have won eight of their last 12 contests.
Jordan Zimmermann (9-7), 4-0 with a 0.87 ERA over his last five road starts coming in, allowed two runs on eight hits and two walks over 5 2/3 frames for Washington, which has dropped two of three on the heels of an eight-game winning streak.

Inside Scoop: Cell phone radiation warnings up in the air
News from CNET:
Created: 08/10/2012
Video description: CNET’s Dan Farber talks to Donna Tam, who’s been covering the battle between the wireless industry and the City of San Francisco about whether cell phone dealers need to disclose radiation risk.
I’m Dan Farber and I’m joined here by Donna tam from CNET who’s been covering the cellphone radiation industry and one of the issues that’s come up is that the city of San Francisco would like to see some warnings signs on cellphones — acquired by customers and quite a bit of controversy around that. Correct and the city passed an ordinance the — no ordinance in 2010. — they want to educate consumers about specific absorption rates. Cellphones which means the amount of radiation that they may be giving off. And — after after they approved the ordinance the — day which is the wireless industry’s lobbying group. Filed suit saying that it was. It was going against the first amendment rights and forcing them to convey a message that they don’t — today. They’re afraid of the weight that was placed on. Then providing — – for consumers would cause some alarm and panic about cellphones and general. That seems this is very similar to what happened with the smoking industry where for years and years the smoking industry would. Two charged in Huntington Beach cellphone slaying
News from Los Angeles Times:
A 23-year-old Huntington Beach man could face life in prison if convicted of killing a man in an altercation that stemmed from an argument over a girlfriend and a stolen cellphone.
A trial for Derek Christopher Adams is scheduled to begin Monday in Orange County Superior Court. He faces murder, robbery and burglary charges in the October 2010 death of Gregory Heintz, who was shot in the stomach in a Huntington Beach park.
Earlier that day, Adams and co-defendant Marissa Star Bilotti, 21, of Huntington Beach, allegedly broke into the home of a Newport Beach man who was dating a woman who Adams was interested in. The two men argued, and Adams allegedly stabbed the man before he and Bilotti fled with the woman’s cellphone.
Adams is accused of sending numerous text messages to the woman and arranging to meet her at Murdy Park to return the phone.
She arrived with two friends, including Heintz. Authorities say Adams tossed the phone to Heintz and then shot him before fleeing with Bilotti, who allegedly was armed with a folding knife she had concealed in her vagina.
Bilotti is also charged with murder and other felonies and is to be tried separately.

Cell phone videos show horrors inside Syria
News from CBS News:
(CBS News)
We’re experiencing one of those times in history when an aging dictatorship hangs on to power by using military force against its own people. For nearly a year we’ve been following the freedom movement in Syria. It appears the dictator Bashir al-Assad is rushing to crush the rebellion before the world can do much about it.
The city of Homs – remember the name – is a little bigger than Philadelphia and it’s been under artillery fire for two weeks. Rebels claim 100 civilians were killed Tuesday alone. The citizens there have been filming the siege on cell phones. The video above shows the sights and sounds of what it’s like to be a citizen of Homs today.
The man shooting the video was saying: “We are being slaughtered. Where are you, all Arabs?”
21 countries of the Arab League have suspended Syria’s membership. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton will be in Tunisia on Friday to meet with representatives of 70 countries to talk about what might be done to stop the killing.

Brain chooses cellphone-listening ear
News from UPI.com:
Published: Feb. 21, 2012 at 5:36 PM
DETROIT, Feb. 21 (UPI) – There is a strong correlation between left/right brain dominance and the ear people choose to listen to a cellphone with, a U.S. study found.
In the study conducted by the Henry Ford Health System in Detroit, more than 70 percent of participants held their cellphones up to the ear on the same side as their dominant hand.
Left brain dominant people — those whose speech and language center is on the left side of the brain — are more likely to use their right hand for writing and other everyday tasks, including holding a cellphone, the study found.
This practice, researchers said, appears illogical since it is challenging to listen on the phone with the right ear and take notes with the right hand.
Similarly, right brain dominant people are more likely to use the left hand to hold the phone, the researchers found.
“Our findings have several implications, especially for mapping the language center of the brain,” Michael Seidman, director of the division of otologic and neurotologic surgery at Henry Ford, said.
The study also may offer additional evidence that cell phone use and brain, and head and neck tumors may not be linked, he said.
