Haas Wins At Riviera In Playoff

PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. — Bill Haas, the 2011 FedEx Cup Champion and Tour Championship winner, is not an underdog or an overachiever or any of those other adjectives used to describe people who win when they aren’t supposed to. He’s not like Jeremy Lin, the current poster boy of overachieving athletes. No coach overlooked Haas as he was coming up through the ranks of junior golf and at Wake Forest.

As a son of Jay Haas, a 9-time PGA Tour winner, he was supposed to make it. But on Sunday at the Northern Trust Open, he must have felt like the odd man out in the three-way playoff with Phil Mickelson and Keegan Bradley. It was Phil’s tournament to win and if he didn’t win then everybody wanted his protg, Bradley, to wa…………… continues on ESPN

NHRA’s future at Firebird International Raceway in question
News from AZ Central.com:

Special for The Republic

There’s a “1,000 percent” chance the 2013 Arizona Nationals will be at Firebird International Raceway. But, after that, it’s increasingly likely there won’t be an NHRA Full Throttle Series event in the state until 2015 — and at a new location.

2012 NHRA Arizona Nationals

Raceway President Charlie Allen told The Republic, “I still don’t know” if he’ll be successful in exercising a seven-year option on his current lease with the Gila River Indian Community. The Community owns the land where the track is located, near Chandler, and the lease expires next spring. Allen said the early season 2013 NHRA weekend will happen “1,000 percent.”

“We’re constantly after them,” Allen said of Gila River leaders. “We’re communicating, our attorneys, their attorneys.”

In case no deal is reached, however, Allen already has been studying a new site. He declined to reveal the exact location, other than to say, “It’s south o…………… continues on AZ Central.com

Adam Scott, Hunter Haas share AT&T National lead
News from San Francisco Chronicle:

Adam Scott,of Australia, tees off on the eight hole during the first round of the AT&T National golf tournament at Aronimink Golf Club, Thursday, June 30, 2011, in Newtown Square, Pa.

Adam Scott must have felt as if he got another crack at the U.S. Open on Thursday in the AT&T National outside Philadelphia – only this course felt more like a real U.S. Open.

Aronimink built on its growing reputation when only 28 players managed to break par in the opening round, a low number for a standard tournament despite warm sunshine and a mild breeze. Scott and Hunter Haas, who were tied atop the leaderboard at 4-under-par 66, followed a U.S. Open formula by trying to keep the ball in play off the tee and playing cautiously on the greens.

“It’s a great golf course and it’s in g…………… continues on San Francisco Chronicle

NEWTOWN SQUARE, Pa. — As the saying goes, there’s the known and then there’s the unknown …

That pretty much sums up the first-round leaderboard at the second and last AT&T National to be played at Aronimink Golf Club.

And that’s the way it can sometimes be on the PGA Tour, especially at a stop where no player ranked among the top 14 on the planet shows up.

They’re still going to hand out a trophy come Sunday afternoon. The rest mostly gets filed away under details.

So, in no particular order, these were some of the sightings you had Thursday on this Donald Ross masterpiece:

Dean Wilson, not to be confused with Mark, who won twice earlier this season. Dean was one of the guys who played with Annika Sorenstam for 36 holes at Colonial in 2003. He s…………… continues on The Republic
