Kendall Bradley checked her phone and gave herself 35 minutes to fall apart. She’d left Nick in the MRA machine, his eyes full of pain and fear, and was finally alone. Or, at least, as alone as one could be in the hospital triage room. Somewhere in Ho Chi Minh there had been an accident, and victims were being rushed in in shocking states of disfigurement. The chaos did nothing to quiet Bradley’s sense that her friend’s situation was spinning wildly beyond her control.

Her phone buzzed. Maybe it’s good news, she thought. Henry Friedman, her mentor at Duke, had been working connections to get them out of Vietnam, and had been consulting with Duke doctors.

“Kendall,” he said, “you need to understand how serious this is. … There is a 70 percent chance that Nick won’t survive.”

Friedman continued, passing along a colleague’s instructions about medications Nick should receive. Bradley mumbled something and hung up. Nick Tsipis was 22, a varsity athlete. People like that don’t just die. Except sometimes they do. Bradley, who would start medical school in six weeks, knew that much.

NEW ORLEANS — Police reported Saturday they are looking for a masked man who robbed a cellphone store Thursday in the 3300 block of Bienville Street.

The man walked into the store at 1:10 p.m. armed with a gun and demanded the clerk open the cash register, police said in a news release.

The clerk placed money from the till on the counter, the release says.

After grabbing the store’s money, the robber then turned to the only customer in the store and demanded he empty his pockets, the release says.

The customer handed over his cash to the robber.

The fugitive ran off with about $ 600 to $ 700, the release says.

The incident was captured on the store’s video surveillance camera, the release says.

Samsung’s smartphone shipments soared over the same period last to easily grab the lion’s share of the global market, a market researcher said Thursday. While another market researcher put Samsung No.1 in the overall cell phone market.

The South Korean electronics giant’s share went from 12.2 percent in the first quarter of 2011 to a whopping 30.6 percent in the first quarter of this year, according to Strategy Analytics (see chart below).

Apple’s growth isn’t too shabby either: it jumped from an 18.1 percent share last year (which at that time was larger than Samsung’s) to 24.1 percent.

Overall global smartphone shipments grew 41 percent annually to reach 145 million units in the first quarter of 2012. More than half of that being Samsung and Apple combined.

People in Nova Scotia would have their cellphone contract cancellation fees capped and be told of any changes that would increase their bills under legislation proposed Friday that aims to regulate the mobile phone industry.

Service Nova Scotia Minister John MacDonell said amendments to the province’s Consumer Protection Act would cap cancellation fees to $ 50 and require telecommunications companies to provide minimum monthly costs of service in contracts and advertising.

Hollywood celebrated a foreign invasion at Sunday’s Golden Globes, as films and television shows with a distinctly international pedigree collected many of the evening’s prizes.

“The Artist,” French filmmaker Michel Hazanavicius’s ode to silent movies, was the night’s top honoree, winning three awards. In the comedy or musical category, the black-and-white movie was named best picture, while Jean Dujardin was named actor for his performance as a silent film star made obsolete by the arrival of talkies. Ludovic Bource won for score.

“Je suis très, très heureux,” — “I’m very, very happy” — Dujardin said backstage in his native French, which is more than he got to say in the nearly silent film.

A definitively American drama, Alexander Payne’s “The Descendants,” took home two awards in the drama category, best picture and actor for George Clooney, who played a befuddled father trying to connect with his daughters after his wife’s boating accident.

“It’s a coming of age film for a 50-year-old,” said Clooney, who was also nominated for his work as a director on “Ides of March,” but lost out to Martin Scorsese. “I think a lot of us have dealt with people like that.”
