Many of the numbers were good as Apple beat Wall Street’s expectations for the most recent quarter — but said it won’t for the next one.

(Credit: James Martin/CNET)

Apple surprised Wall Street today with stronger than expected earnings in its second quarter, though the company came up short in its estimates for the next one.

Apple reported earnings of $ 9.5 billion on $ 43.6 billion in sales. That was right on target with the $ 9.5 billion in profit and just barely above the $ 42.3 billion in sales that Wall Street expected. It was also above Apple’s own expectations, which were between $ 9.23 and $ 10.23 per share on sales of $ 41 billion to $ 43 billion.

By comparison, Apple tallied up a higher $ 11.6 billion in profit on sales of $ 39.2 billion during the same quarter last year. That was fueled by iPhone and continues on CNET

$ 15K in cellphones robbed at gunpoint from Coral Springs T-Mobile store
News from Sun-Sentinel:

CORAL SPRINGS —

If there is any doubt that cellphones are among the most coveted consumer goods around, Coral Springs police say armed robbers held up a T-Mobile store’s employees and stole 25 phones worth more than $ 15,000.

The incident happened around 9:15 p.m. Thursday at the store, 1327 N. University Drive, when a man and woman posed as customers before the man pulled out a handgun and ordered employees to the back of the store, Coral Springs Police Sgt. Brad McKeone said Friday.

SOMERVILLE — A cell phone dropped at the scene of an alleged sexual assault led to the arrest of 25-year-old New Brunswick man who is in jail with bail set at $ 150,000.

Soriano gave the following account.

On Jan. 15, a 26-year-old woman reported to Franklin Township Police that she had been sexually assaulted in the Somerset section of the township by an unknown man. The man dropped his cell phone when he fled. The woman was taken to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick.

At London Olympics, women’s athletes’ wardrobes are source of debate
News from Washington Post:

LONDON — More than a century after women were first allowed to compete in the Olympics, the run-up to the 2012 London Games has been fraught with controversy over what, exactly, female athletes should wear.

Beach volleyball players will be able to wear more clothes, rather than less, for the first time in Olympic competition — free to swap their bikinis for more modest shorts and sleeved tops. The change, announced in spring, was designed to accommodate countries’ cultural beliefs but, in the process, has devastated legions of male fans who cheer the sport’s skimpy attire as much as its athleticism.

Kenyans use cell phones for everything from buying groceries to paying rent

Margaret Wambui speaks on her cell phone outside her

By Mary Murray, NBC News

NAIROBI, Kenya – Imagine paying just $ 20 for a fancy cell phone with a good calling plan. Or how about working with a cell phone company that won’t obligate you to sign one of those tricky multiyear contracts with deceptive pricing plans detailed in tiny print that skyrocket with every added feature? How about calls to anywhere in the country costing less than 3 cents a minute and most international calls costing just a penny more?

Sound too good to be true, especially for American cell phone users? Not in Kenya. I’m on assignment in Kenya and am astonished at how little people pay for cell phone calls.

The phones work, calls are cheap, and the country is using cell phone technology innovative ways – beyond simple telephone calls to personal banking.

In addition to having us beat, cell phone tariffs here are the lowest in Africa.

NTP to get patent cash from “pretty much” entire cell phone industry

NTP to get patent cash from “pretty much” entire cell phone industry
News from Ars Technica:

Cell phone makers are paying dearly for the right to patents covering “wireless e-mail” technology.

NTP Inc., a patent-holding company that won a $ 612.5 million settlement from RIM in 2006, has struck again with a settlement involving 13 of the biggest companies in the tech industry.

NTP, noting that it holds eight US patents “relating to the delivery of electronic mail over wireless systems,” today said it reached a settlement with 13 companies representing just about everyone involved in building and selling smartphones or delivering e-mail to them. The 13 companies are AT&T, Verizon Wireless, Sprint Nextel, T-Mobile, Apple, HTC, Motorola Mobility, Palm, LG, Samsung, Google, Microsoft, and Yahoo.

“The signed agreement provides broad coverage under NTP’s patent portfolio to all of the companies,” NTP said. Consequently, “all pending litigation between NTP and these companies will be dismissed.”

With the exception of Nokia and RIM, who were already paying NTP, the settlement covered “pretty much the entire industry,” said intellectual property attorney Ron Epstein, who was settlement counsel for NTP and used to run Intel’s licensing group. But when asked if that means NTP is done filing lawsuits,…………… continues on Ars Technica

Text from your cellphone: Get me out of the car
News from San Francisco Chronicle:

STROUDSBURG, Pa. (AP) — If you’re like us, you’ve wondered why manufacturers tell us not to leave electronic devices in a hot car.

It’s because of the battery. Even the Energizer Bunny would pant and keel over in this heat.

At high temperatures, chemicals in the battery can heat and explode, turning your iPod into iPoop, according to Geek Squad agent Dave Narducci of Best Buy in Stroudsburg. “Alkaline is the least safe. Lithium is safer,” he says.

iPods, iPhones and iPads use lithium batteries, but Apple says that using your device, including a notebook computer, at temperatures greater than 95 degrees can permanently damage the battery’s capacity.

Cellphone photo leads to Brooklyn man being charged with sexual misconduct …

GIAN VERDELLI

Arrested Monday for the 169th time, a 60-year-old Brooklyn man has been charged with engaging in criminal sexual contact with two women on PATH trains in the past several weeks, Port Authority Police said yesterday.

Police were able to collar Gian Verdelli, a registered sex offender in New York, because the fast-thinking Jersey City woman he allegedly molested on June 30 snapped his photo with her cellphone, Port Authority spokeswoman Jackie Yodashkin said.

Verdelli was wearing the same clothing when Port Authority plainclothes officers detained him Monday morning as he attempted to board a PATH train at Grove Street going to 33rd Street, Yodashkin said.

“The suspect gave a video statement to police stating ‘It could have been me,’ ” Yodashkin said.

Verdelli was charged with two counts of criminal sexual contact, a fourth-degree offense, that carries up to 18 months in prison on each charge.

When he was busted Monday, Verdelli was also charged with possession of marijuana under 50 grams and possession of drug paraphernalia, officials said.

Cellphone carriers report surge in surveillance requests from law enforcement

Cellphone carriers report surge in surveillance requests from law enforcement
News from Washington Post:

Local, state and federal law enforcement authorities made more than 1.3 million demands for cellphone subscriber information last year in a sign of their growing reliance on technology to aid criminal and emergency investigations.

The reports from carriers came in response to a congressional inquiry seeking to document the surge in surveillance involving data from mobile devices, as more and more Americans carry cellphones to talk, text and send messages.

Rep. Edward J. Markey (D-Mass.) requested the information from carriers, including records on “cell tower” dumps, in which the carriers provide law enforcement authorities with data on cellphone users near a cell tower during a discreet period of time.

According to the carriers, nine of whom responded to Markey’s inquiry, all requests were made pursuant to a legal warrant or granted due to an emergency situation in which an individual was in imminent danger.

“We cannot allow privacy protections to be swept aside with the sweeping nature of these information requests, especially for innocent consumers,” Markey, co-chairman of the Bipartisan Congressional Privacy Caucus, said in a statement. “Law enforcement agencies are looking for a needle, but what are they doing with the haystack?”

The volume of the new demands being made of cellphone carriers was first reported online…………… continues on Washington Post

On Computers: Booster may solve your cellphone problems
News from Norwich Bulletin:

The biggest roadblock to cellphones becoming your main phone at home or office is blocked signals.

We all have friends who must stand on their driveway to make a cell call. For any number of reasons, their cell doesn’t get enough signal bars inside their houses.

My neighbors suffer from this. But in our house, our reception is fine. So it must not be the cell tower or our neighborhood being in a “dead zone.” Chances are good it’s the house itself. If you get a strong signal outside and a weak one inside, it’s definitely the house.

Insulation covered in metal foil, a “radiant barrier,” can disrupt calls. So can use of metal instead of wood for wall studs. Steel girders in buildings can do the same.

I know we’ve all seen the miracle signal boosters (usually selling for $ 19.95). As with the old TV antenna boosters, many are rip-offs. I mean, do you really think a piece of tape stuck on your phone will do the deed?

You might be able to fix things with a real wireless signal amplifier. These are expensive (starting about $ 200), but some promise perfect five-bar reception.

The booster grabs the weak cellphone transmission and pumps it up to full strength. It’s like the old signal repeaters once used to boost radio reception.

Many come with a unit and two antennas: one on the box and an auxiliary one that goes outside or in an attic o…………… continues on Norwich Bulletin
