Cell towers could be coming to more schools
News from Sun Sentinel:
Cellular phone towers, once the object of scorn by parents and residents, may be allowed on more public school campuses in Palm Beach County.
A citizens group is recommending the removal of a school district ban on cell towers. It says they no longer are community eyesores, and more significantly, there’s no known direct link to health dangers that used to make people panic at the thought of them.
Adding to the argument for adding cell towers at schools is this: 75 percent of teens own mobile phones, and even 20 percent of elementary school kids use them, according to one study highlighted by school district officials.

Mugger returns cellphone: ‘I thought they were coming back to jump on me again’
News from Chicago Tribune:
Sidney Tyson feared for his life when one of the young muggers who beat and robbed him at a South Shore bus stop came back minutes later.
But instead of another beating — or worse — the 63-year-old Tyson was inexplicably handed back his smart phone and $ 5 bus pass.
“I thought they were coming back to jump on me again,” Tyson said this morning, hours after the attack that happened at about 8:20 p.m. Tuesday near South Shore Drive and 75th Street.
“I thought maybe they came back with some weapons and they were going to shoot me this time,” said Tyson, who used his cane to fend off the robbers.
Police arrested three suspects a short time later after the same group apparently robbed a 45-year-old man of his wallet about a block away.
Tyson said he was attacked from behind by five or six young men who punched him and knocked him to the ground as they grabbed his phone. The robbers never went for Tyson’s cash, he said.

Nearly Half of US Cell Phone Owners Download Apps
News from PC Magazine:
Nearly half of adult cell phone owners, or 42 percent, have apps installed on their cell phones, according to a new report from Pew’s Internet & American Life Project.
The percentage of adults actively downloading apps has risen in the past two years from 22 percent in September 2009 to 38 percent in August 2011, Pew found.
Pew also examined app ownership on tablets to find that the three-quarters of adults who own tablets also download apps. Since 10 percent of U.S. adults own tablets, this adds up to about 8 percent of all American adults.
When the results from both tablet and cell phone app buyers are combined, 34 percent of adults download apps to at least one of their mobile devices.

Indoor GPS Coming Soon to Cell Phones
News from PC Magazine:
GPS radios on cell phones are notorious battery hogs. But what if your phone could still find you without it active all the time—even indoors?
Most of today’s smartphones offer GPS navigation, as well as a smattering of location-based apps that could be more useful—if only the GPS radio didn’t drain the battery so quickly. That’s to say nothing of using your phone indoors, where you’re lucky if a GPS satellite can get a fix on your location at all.
In an effort to improve this situation, CSR has announced its next-generation GPS offerings for cell phones, portable navigation devices, and automotive systems. The company announced three main technologies: SiRFstar V, the fifth generation of its trademark GPS radio chipset for mobile devices; SiRFusion, a self-l…………… continues on PC Magazine

Alerts on overages coming to a cellphone near you
News from Washington Post:
By Cecilia Kang,
The wireless industry announced Monday plans to alert customers who are about to go over limits for voice, text and data services or incur international roaming fees, a move that will for now stave off regulation of their billing practices.
Under the plan, which will go into full effect April 17, 2013, nearly all cellphone customers will automatically begin to receive alerts for free, trade group CTIA announced at a news conference on Monday.
The industry-led plan comes amid rising consumer anger about cellphone billing surprises — a problem that has hit one in six users, according to the Federal Communications Commission.

Cellphone users may face more radiation risks
News from Kennebec Journal:

PORTLAND — Cellphone users may be in more danger from low-level radiation than they’re being told, researchers and public health advocates said Monday during a presentation at the University of Southern Maine.
“Our greatest concern is that we’re setting ourselves up … to have an epidemic of cancer in the future that should be prevented right now,” said Dr. David Carpenter, director of the Institute for Health and the Environment at the University of Albany. “In my judgment, the weight of evidence is so strong now” that there should be stronger warnings about the risks.

Comcast, Verizon coming to Xbox
News from The Seattle Times:
Originally published October 5, 2011 at 7:29 PM | Page modified October 5, 2011 at 9:20 PM
A turning point in Microsoft’s decades-long effort to put its software at the heart of consumer entertainment will come this holiday season when cable networks around the world begin making their content available through the Xbox 360 console.
Microsoft on Wednesday announced details of the Xbox TV features it had promised since June.
Comcast, Verizon FiOS and HBO Go are among the TV services that will be available through the console, which is evolving into a hub for video content, as well as games.
But it doesn’t mean Xbox owners will get free TV.
To get content from cable companies on an Xbox, you’ll have to be a cable customer and most of the services will require a $ 60 per year Xbox Live Gold subscription.
Cable companies are also limiting what they’ll deliver through the Xbox, so most customers a…………… continues on The Seattle Times

Cell Phone Service Coming to MTA Subways
News from Patch.com:
Beginning Tuesday, cell phone and WiFi service will be available in six subway stations in Manhattan, according to the Daily News.
The new service will be launched next week, as a part of a pilot program. However, don’t expect to be able to make calls while the trains are in transit; service will be available only on platforms.
“I think it’s about time,” said Bed-Stuy resident Karen Torres while waiting at the Classon Avenue Station. “Sometimes you’re waiting for the train a very long time, and you need to get in contact with people to let them know you’re late. And the emergency side of it, people are in emergencies all the time. We should be able to get in touch with family or friends in those situations.”

FBI sneaked cellphone into LA jail in deputy misconduct probe
News from Los Angeles Times:
FBI agents sneaked a cellphone to an inmate inside the L.A. County jail as part of a probe into allegations of inmate beatings and other misconduct by deputies, a Times investigation has found.
The jails have been plagued with problems over the last decade, including inmate riots, killings, antiquated facilities, huge lawsuit settlements and even the formation by some deputies of a gang-like clique. Inmate accusations of beatings are common within the many facilities that make up the department’s jail system, but most are unsubstantiated.

HTC Rhyme Coming To Verizon, Accessories In Tow
News from AnandTech:
Long rumored and now unveiled, the HTC Rhyme (nee Bliss) will be hitting Verizon Wireless on September 29th for $ 199, a high price point for a phone with relatively mediocre specifications. Though not explicitly stated, the phone is being positioned to fill a feminine niche within the market, that is otherwise not well served by the hard edged, black monoliths that we’ve come to expect. To cater to this less masculine aesthetic the phone will be offered, exclusively on Verizon, with a plum colored body; and features what’s being called the HTC Charm, an LED indicator, also plum colored, that hangs from a lanyard attached to the device.
The 3.7″ phone features a WVGA SLCD display, and is powered by the same MSM8655 as found in the Incredible 2. Indeed the internals match the Incredible 2 exactly, with the frame simply shrunk down to the smaller form factor. Where the Rhyme makes a…………… continues on AnandTech

Super accurate Russian GPS coming to a cell phone near you
News from DVICE:
Comrades! GPS is now officially much, much better, thanks to the Russians: with their GLONASS global positioning system now online, you’ll get the sweet sweet coverage you deserve, even deep in the midst of urban jungles.
The Russians, being Russian, have decided to optimize their shiny new GLONASS GPS satellite constellation for the northern hemisphere, unlike our own capitalist dog GPS, which works equally well all over the world. Huh, that seems backwards somehow. Anyway, what this means to you is that you’re more likely to get a good GLONASS fix here in the U.S., especially in areas where most GPS systems would have a hard time, like in cities with tall buildings that block out the sky.
GLONASS receivers are juuuuust starting to trickle into mobile devices, and Qualcomm is showing off what a hybrid GPS/GLON…………… continues on DVICE

Verizon’s fast LTE network is slowly coming online in Portland
News from OregonLive.com:
Verizon subscribers with 4G-equipped phones tell me their service is getting faster — quite a bit faster — as the wireless carrier turns on its new, LTE network across the Portland area.
Verizon skipped Portland last year when it began the initial rollout of its high-speed, LTE network in other parts of the country. But in March, the company said Portland is among 145 metro areas due to have high-speed LTE service available by the end of 2011.
Many Verizon subscribers already have phones equipped for the higher speeds and can access them when they’re traveling outside Oregon. While they’re here, the gadgets default to the slower 3G network.
Now, though, the faster connections are showing up in Portland, too.

New Verizon ad features new Xoom 2?
News from CNET:
So here’s an Angelina Jolie look-alike clutching what just might be a Xoom 2 look-alike.
At least that’s the impression some wise commenters on YouTube seem to have obtained from a new ad posted yesterday by Verizon.
This, for some, might be cause for excitement. The original Xoom was slightly expensive and didn’t seem to offer quite the same creature comforts as the iPad–especially if the creature happened to be human.
Moreover, it was launched with advertising that laid a hefty dollop of nonsense onto an unsuspecting Super Bowl audience. Perhaps you remember it. It was the one that told you Apple was now Big Brother, while Motorola’s Xoom was the new, um, flower power. Or something.
This new Verizon ad is a curious affair.
