For 49ers, Call at Quarterback Looks to Be Right One
News from New York Times:
Ahmad Brooks, Donte Whitner and the rest of the San Francisco defense made enough plays for the 49ers to win no matter whom they started at quarterback.
Brooks and Whitner returned interceptions for touchdowns, the 49ers sacked Drew Brees five times, and San Francisco ended the New Orleans Saints’ three-game winning streak, 31-21, on Sunday.
Colin Kaepernick was solid in his second career start while Alex Smith, deemed healthy enough to suit up after recovering from a concussion, watched from the sideline. Kaepernick passed for 231 yards, including a short touchdown to Frank Gore, and ran for a 7-yard score. He also threw his first career interception, but it was inconsequential.
Brees finished with 267 yards and 3 touchdowns. After rushing for 140 yards or more in each of its previous three games, New…………… continues on New York Times

Fire kills at least 112 workers at 8-story Bangladesh garment factory with no …
News from Fox News:
DHAKA, Bangladesh – Fire raced up the floors of a Bangladeshi garment factory with no emergency exits, killing at least 112 people, some of whom jumped from the eight-story building where they made clothes for major global retailers.
Investigators suspect that a short circuit caused the fire Saturday night outside the capital, Dhaka, said Maj. Mohammad Mahbub, fire department operations director.
The factory is owned by Tazreen Fashions Ltd., a subsidiary of the Tuba Group, which makes products for Wal-Mart, IKEA and other companies in the U.S. and Europe.
Wal-Mart says it previously stopped working with nearly 50 Bangladeshi factories because of fire danger. An assessment of Tazreen conducted for the retailer last year rated the company as a “high risk,” but Wal-Mart said Monday it did not know whether it was still buying products made at the factory.
Firefighters recovered at least 100 bodies from the factory and 12 more people died at hospitals after jumping from the building to escape the fire, Mahbub told The Associated Press on Sunday.
“Had there been at least one emergency exit through outside the factory, the casualties would have been much lower,” Mahbub said.
Local media reported that up to 124 people were killed.

At London Olympics, women’s athletes’ wardrobes are source of debate
News from Washington Post:
LONDON — More than a century after women were first allowed to compete in the Olympics, the run-up to the 2012 London Games has been fraught with controversy over what, exactly, female athletes should wear.
Beach volleyball players will be able to wear more clothes, rather than less, for the first time in Olympic competition — free to swap their bikinis for more modest shorts and sleeved tops. The change, announced in spring, was designed to accommodate countries’ cultural beliefs but, in the process, has devastated legions of male fans who cheer the sport’s skimpy attire as much as its athleticism.

News from New York Daily News:

Yoga instructor Alice Van Ness, left, instructs students Wednesday, July 11, 2012, at Lifestretch Yoga in Milpitas, Calif. A California yoga instructor has been fired for her disapproving stink-eye glare at a Facebook employee using a cellphone in class.
A San Francisco Bay Area yoga instructor didn’t like when a student tapped away on her cell phone during a class at Facebook’s headquarters.
Her request: Put it away.
For that, she told the Daily News on Wednesday, she was fired — an extreme move that has put a spotlight on social manners in the social media age.
“It’s a respect issue,” said Alice Van Ness, 35, who’s been teaching yoga since 2006. “Why are you here, if you don’t want to pay attention?”
Van Ness said she was teaching at the Facebook Fitness Center in Menlo Park last month, when she told the beginners class to turn off cell phones, after seeing a female Facebook employee with hers out.
But in the midst of Van Ness teaching the “half moon pose,” that same student, sitti…………… continues on New York Daily News

Cellphone Towers in State Parks: Answering Nature’s Call
News from TheDay.com:
Southeastern Connecticut News, Sports, Weather and Video The Day newspaper Cellphone Towers in State Parks: Answering Nature’s Call
What is it with wacky environmentalists who are fighting to block construction of cellphone towers in state parks and forests?
Next thing you know they’ll be trying to keep ATVs and dirt bikes from using the trails.
The problem isn’t too many towers, it’s too few of them. When’s the last time you got more than one bar on your Nokia while out in some godforsaken boondocks?
What would happen if you got lost and couldn’t get a signal? Do you think the Sierra Club, which is urging the Connecticut General Assembly to shoot down a law to allow wilderness tower construction, would go looking for you?
This raises another question: How come the state doesn’t permit fast-food restaurants, motels or convenience stores in parks and forests? What’s up with that?
How many times has this happened to you: You’ve been walking for a half-hour or more and start to get light-headed because you haven’t had a bite to eat since those pancakes, sausages, home fries and cinnamon buns at breakfast. At the very least there should be vending machines so you can bring up your blood sugar with a few Devil Dog…………… continues on TheDay.com

CMF cell phone issue concerns grand jurors
News from TheReporter.com:
California Medical Facility in Vacaville should have a plan to control unauthorized use of cell phones among inmates, the Solano grand jry recommended in a report issued Friday.
The jury, which regularly reviews and reports on various government institutions, said its concern is that inmates’ can use unauthorized cell phones for illegal purposes which poses a threat to staff and inmate safety, according to the report.
“CMF staff stated there is a problem with cell phones being smuggled in by staff members and vendors for inmates’ illegal use,” the report noted.
According to state statistics, 236 cell phones were confiscated at CMF in 2011, with staff recommends the state find a way to restrict cell phone use by blocking signals in the prison.
Bill Sessa, spokesman for Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, agreed unauthorized cell phones in all state prisons are a problem which the state is focused on.
The state this week signed a contract with Global Tel-Link to provide phones to inmates to make calls from an authorized phone network. Technology will be used to block cell transmissions, such as e-mails, texts, phone calls and Internet access, according to a state announcement.
“It is a solution to a security problem which is not just at CMF but,” Sessa said.

Cellphone with incoming call from ‘Baby’s momma’ at Mich. crime scene helps …
News from Washington Post:
BAY CITY, Mich. — Thanks to a ringing cellphone with an incoming call from “Baby’s momma,” police in Michigan say they were able to track down a suspected robber.
Investigators in Bay City said a cellphone was found on the ground of a convenience store following a break-in last September. When it rang, officers glanced at the odd caller ID and answered the phone.
The female caller said the phone belonged to Kyle Schmiege but had recently been stolen. But during their investigation, police linked Schmiege to a February 2011 home burglary.
He pleaded guilty to second-degree home invasion. MLive.com reported Wednesday (http://bit.ly/IKyTwr) that the 20-year-old Schmiege was sentenced to between 23 months and 15 years in prison, with credit for about four months served.
Bay City is about 115 miles northwest of Detroit.

Cellphone Blocking Moves Ahead in California Prisons
News from Government Technology:
The California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) this week announced that it has awarded a contract for two systems expected to eliminate the use of contraband cellphones among inmates and crack down on dangerous communications.
The contract includes the Inmate/Ward Telephone and Managed Access systems, both of which will be implemented by Global Tel*Link. The department initially made plans to develop the Inmate/Ward Telephone system — which will allow inmates to make approved collect calls on pay phones at a reduced rate, and allow multiple payment options for inmates and families — and then added the Managed Access System into the contract to comply with a new state law approved last year that enacted new penalties for unauthorized use of mobile devices at correctional facilities.
The Managed Access System, expected to be functioning at the first institution by the end of 2012, will block cell services such as email, texts, phone calls and Internet access for all cellphone numbers not previously entered into the system as approved devices. The plan includes a cell tower or antenna installation at each state institution, according to the CDCR.
“It provides an umbrella where your telephone number must be on this authorized list in order for it to be passed on to a commercial carrier,” said Tammy Irwin, project manag…………… continues on Government Technology

Auto makers call for cooperation with cellphone developers to fight distracted …
News from Washington Post:
Your apps and your automobile need to work together to minimize driving distractions, carmakers said Tuesday, appealing to the likes of Apple and Google to join them in tackling the problem.
Unless mobile communication devices are integrated into vehicle systems designed to minimize their potential distraction, drivers who want instant access to the data they provide will allow their eyes to stray from the road, said Robert Strassburger, vice president for safety at the Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers.
“We need to have all the parties at the table,” Strassburger said during testimony at day-long hearing on distracted driving hosted by the National Transportation Safety Board on Tuesday.

Chapel Hill bans cell-phone use while driving
News from Charlotte Observer:
CHAPEL HILL Talking on a cell phone while driving in Chapel Hill becomes illegal June 1.
The town became the first in the nation to pass an ordinance outlawing talking on both hand-held and hands-free cell phones while driving. After two years of discussion on the issue, the council voted 5-4 Monday night.
Mayor Mark Kleinschmidt and council members Gene Pease, Laurin Easthom and Matt Czajkowski opposed the measure.
The council deadlocked 4-4 on the ban earlier this month. It required a second reading Monday night. Council member Ed Harrison, who was absent during the first reading, cast the deciding vote.
Harrison, an avid cyclist, said much of the odd driving he encounters is caused by people distracted by talking on a cell phone.
“[It] is not by people who are eating things or combing their hair or putting on lipstick,” he said. “It’s by people who are talking on a cell phone and not seeing me.”
The ordinance applies to all streets town-wide, including state-owned roads. Drivers would be allowed to make emergency calls, and calls with a spouse, parent or child. Violators will be fined $ 25.
Council member Donna Bell said the ban is a good first step in continuing a conversation about driving safety. She said she hopes the General Assembly will soon follow with a statewide law.
“I wish that this was broader, but…………… continues on Charlotte Observer

ALTON — A cell phone may have saved the lives of two snowmobilers who went through thin ice in the middle of Lake Winnipesaukee Saturday night.
The two men were rescued from The Broads area of the lake by rescue crews from Gilford and Tuftonboro with the help of a DHART rescue helicopter and the Tuftonboro Fire Department’s airboat about 9:30 p.m., according to Gilford Fire Chief Stephen Carrier.
Both men were found suffering from hypothermia having been immersed in the 35-degree lake water, Carrier said, but neither suffered serious injuries and both were taken to local hospitals for precautionary health checks.
“They both got wet, but I guess they were able to get out of the water quick enough,” said Carrier, who said the men crashed into a small open area of water in the town of Alton.
Authorities received a 911 call from one of the two men at 7:54 p.m., reporting “that he was looking for a friend and could no longer see him, and that he had gone thro…………… continues on The Union Leader

HAGERSTOWN, Md. (AP) — It’s a tree that can reach out and touch someone. A tall pine in Hagerstown, Maryland, isn’t sprouting cones but calls. Verizon Wireless has built a 150-foot cellphone tower disguised as a pine tree. It’s the first such stealth tower the company has put up in the area. But a local paper (Herald-Mail) reports the tower is getting mixed reviews. County Historic District Commission Chairman Charles Stewart says “it looks kind of absurd.” But Jim Stevens, who works near the tower, says it “blends in better.”

Lawmakers Call for Official Hearing over Carrier IQ, Cellphone Security
News from TIME:
With all the concern and conversation surrounding the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) these days, you’re forgiven if you forgot about Carrier IQ and the possibility that your cellphone contains hidden keystroke-tracking software monitoring every click. Washington lawmakers have forgotten nothing — in fact they’re pushing for an official investigation into the matter.
The Carrier IQ story broke just over a month ago, as systems administrator Trevor Eckhart revealed he’d discovered software on his Android HTC phone capable of registering every keystroke on the device. Cellphone manufacturers and carriers quickly distanced themselves from responsibility, and Sprint eventually disabled the software on its devices in response to the outcry. While other matters — chiefly the lack of new developments — have knocked this story off the radar, a letter to the Chairman of the House Energy and Commerce Committee Rep. Fred Upton (R-MI) suggests several…………… continues on TIME

Woman beaten and robbed of cellphone speaks out
News from Los Angeles Times:
The video above contains graphic images.
A 19-year-old woman who was beaten by a thief trying to steal her Boost Mobile cellphone said she was so caught off-guard by the attack that she fought back instinctively without thinking.
“I was just like, ‘Whoa!’” Jane Santamaria told KABC-TV of the attack Sunday night in the lobby of her Pico-Union apartment complex. “I snapped into this mode where I was like boom, boom. I was trying to defend myself.”
The beating was captured on a surveillance camera, which police released Thursday, asking for the public’s help in identifying the attacker.
Barely 4 feet 11 inches tall, Santamaria fought back, but the suspect beat her again.
She tried to stop him from leaving, but he escaped with the cellphone.
Eventually, neighbors heard Santamaria’s screams, but it was too late. She suffered some bruising to her face, but refused medical attention, police said.
The suspect was described as Latino between 25 to 35 years of age, 5-feet-5 and 180 to 200 pounds. He was last seen wearing jeans, a white T-shirt with black printing on the front and back, and black shoes.
Anyone with information is asked to call (877) LAPD-24-7.

Cell phone ban the right call
News from South Bend Tribune:
5:20 a.m. EST, January 9, 2012
For several years now, the National Transportation Safety Board has tried to limit the use of portable electronic devices.
In the past, it has recommended bans for school bus drivers and commercial truckers.
Still, it came as a surprise to some last month when the safety board made its most far-reaching recommendation yet: a nationwide ban on the use of cell phones and text messaging devices while driving.
Simply put, if adopted, such a ban would outlaw non-emergency phone calls and
texting by operators of every vehicle on the road.
The NTSB defends the decision by pointing to the increasing dangers of distracted driving, a threat the board ties to the ubiquitous cell phone. A recent study by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration offers this statistic: At any given daylight moment, 13.5 million drivers are on hand-held phones.
One NSTB member says that distracted driving is becoming an epidemic, “the new DUI.”
Concerns about the difficulty of enforcing the ban are valid, as are those about infringing on personal freedoms.
But there are at least 3,092 reasons to su…………… continues on South Bend Tribune
