Many of the numbers were good as Apple beat Wall Street’s expectations for the most recent quarter — but said it won’t for the next one.

Apple surprised Wall Street today with stronger than expected earnings in its second quarter, though the company came up short in its estimates for the next one.

Apple reported earnings of $ 9.5 billion on $ 43.6 billion in sales. That was right on target with the $ 9.5 billion in profit and just barely above the $ 42.3 billion in sales that Wall Street expected. It was also above Apple’s own expectations, which were between $ 9.23 and $ 10.23 per share on sales of $ 41 billion to $ 43 billion.

By comparison, Apple tallied up a higher $ 11.6 billion in profit on sales of $ 39.2 billion during the same quarter last year. That was fueled by iPhone and continues on CNET

Although there are hundreds of companies making and selling cellphones, Apple and Samsung accounted for 95% of the industry’s profits in the fourth quarter of 2012.

Apple alone claimed 70% of the cellphone industry’s total worldwide profit of $ 16 billion, while Samsung had 25%, according to a report released late Thursday night by Counterpoint Technology Market Research.

Apple picking: Cell phones being snatched

Apple picking: Cell phones being snatched
News from Ct Post:

STAMFORD — A woman walking on Bedford Street downtown Wednesday night had the cellphone she was talking on ripped out of her hand by a bike-riding phone bandit, police said.

A group of bike-riding youths have stolen more than a dozen iPhones from women who have had the electronic devices snatched from their grasp by the stealthy thieves. Police say the thieves are able to disable the phones and even render their GPS system unworkable and untraceable within minutes and then resell them for up to $ 200 each.

On Wednesday night, the woman was walking in front of Quattro Pazzi on Bedford Street when a bicyclist came riding up behind her and snatched the phone she was using, Sgt. Richard Barbagallo said.

The 45-year-old woman said she did not see the man’s face and told police he was wearing a gray hoodie and fled on his bike. In many of the theft cases, the thieves were riding BMX bikes and stalked women closer to the railroad station, police have said.

Barbagallo said police are reviewing surveillance tapes from area businesses in hopes of identifying the thief. Po…………… continues on Ct Post

TUPELO, Miss. (AP) — It may not be long until it becomes common to hear teachers start a lesson by asking students to pull out their cell phones.

As schools try to add more technology during a time when they are receiving less funding, many will begin to consider allowing students to use devices they already own. That will include cell phones and electronic tablets like iPads.

“Why do you keep buying technology when people have in their pocket phones that are more powerful than computers used to be?” said Tupelo Superintendent Gearl Loden.

In cellphone wars, no bigger battle than Apple vs. Android

In cellphone wars, no bigger battle than Apple vs. Android
News from WRAL.com:

In its latest TV commercial for the Galaxy S3, Samsung makes fun of Apple fans, claiming that Android phones have had better features and capabilities than the iPhone 5 for ages.

“This year we’re finally getting everything that we didn’t get last year,’ an iPhone users says in the ad, which depicts long lines of people waiting outside a store for the release of the latest version of the phone.

The iPhone 5 sold a record 5 million in the first three days of its September release, yet Samsung remains the world’s largest mobile phone retailer.

In Consumer Reports labs, testers put all the phones through their paces, assessing each one’s features and options.

First: Display. Everyone wants a big screen to watch movies, play games and use apps. While the iPhone 5′s four-inch screen is Apple’s biggest yet, it can’t compare with the screens on many Android phones.

“Voice-control is another area of competition,” said Mike Gikas of Consumer Reports. “Here Android capabilities are quite good, though they’re no match for Siri, who can understand and execute more complex commands.”

Gikas to phone: “Find me a theater that’s playing a Bruce Willis movie.”

“Siri: “OK, I found some theaters not far from Yonkers.”

Next up: Navigation.

“Android has more detailed maps, better traffic info and more customization,” Gikas said. “…………… continues on WRAL.com

Cell Phone Bills Have Grown

Apple scored the greatest gain in market share among cell phone makers last quarter but was stuck in third place behind Samsung and LG.

Looking at the three months ending with June, ComScore pegged Apple with a 15.4 percent share of the U.S. mobile-phone market, up from 14 percent the prior three months. Such growth surpassed that of the other top three players, each of which saw a dip in market share.

Samsung’s chunk of the market fell to 25.6 percent from 26 percent, but the company remained the dominant player. In second place was LG with an 18.8 percent share, down from 19.3 percent the prior three months.

Over the same period, Motorola took home an 11.7 percent share, down from 12.8 percent. Though in fifth place, HTC eked out a small gain with a share of 6.4 percent, up from 6 percent. Overall, 234 million Americans age 13 and older were users of mobile phones for the quarter.

I used to think the Department of Motor Vehicles was the best place to find a collection of individuals in catatonic states that cannot be broken, even when an employee says, “it will just be a few more minutes.”

Then I visited a cellphone repair store.

The latter occurred while on a business trip to Las Vegas. My loyal Blackberry Bold suddenly turned into the Blackberry Timid. Calls dropped, keys became stuck and the Trackpad was neither tracking or padding. Eventually the Bold froze completely, prompting me to use my lonely in-room phone at the Bellagio to make a 90-second call to a local Sprint store and set up an appointment. Samsung’s smartphone shipments soared over the same period last to easily grab the lion’s share of the global market, a market researcher said Thursday. While another market researcher put Samsung No.1 in the overall cell phone market.

The South Korean electronics giant’s share went from 12.2 percent in the first quarter of 2011 to a whopping 30.6 percent in the first quarter of this year, according to Strategy Analytics (see chart below).

Apple’s growth isn’t too shabby either: it jumped from an 18.1 percent share last year (which at that time was larger than Samsung’s) to 24.1 percent.

Overall global smartphone shipments grew 41 percent annually to reach 145 million units in the first quarter of 2012. More than half of that being Samsung and Apple combined.

AT&T says its new 4G LTE smartphones are thinner and more efficient than Verizon’s, boasting a new technology that may help AT&T compete against Verizon’s much bigger LTE network.

Ralph de la Vega, chief executive of AT&T’s wireless and consumer unit, told CNET the new phones will launch in the fourth quarter. The phones were slightly delayed because the technology was still being developed, but de la Vega said, “We think it’s worth the wait.”

The phones use a circuit-switch fallback, or CSFB, which allows them to run on a 4G network, flipping back to 3G when they are out of an LTE coverage area. De la Vega did not say which manufacturers are making the technology

Apple’s iPhone 4 remains the top selling smartphone “by far” at both AT&T and Verizon, according to Canaccord Genuity analyst T. Michael Walkley. He added that this was the case, “despite the introduction of several new high-end Android smartphones.”
