Study: Very Few People Can Talk on Cell Phone and Drive
Safely
A new study from psychologists at the University of Utah
suggests that very few people can safely drive while chatting
on a cell phone.
The researchers studied 200 subjects while they simulated
driving on a freeway (without making or receiving any calls
on a cell phone).
Then, they checked out out the subjects' ability to drive
while talking on a cell phone, a conversation that involved
memorizing words and solving mathematics problems.
The two psychologists measured their without and with cell-phone/driving
performance in four categories: (1) following distance,(2)
memory,(3) math execution, and (4) braking reaction time.
The study shows that 2.5 percent of the population—described
by researchers as “supertaskers”-- can successfully
do two things at once without noticeable impairment.
The psychologists said that their research shows that the
majority of people should not be talking on the phone while
driving, and that it could lead to a better understanding
of the regions of the brain that are responsible for the so-called
supertaskers’ ability to successfully do more than one
task at a time.
