Court Upholds School Cellphone Ban in New York City

According to a New York Times report, the battle over cell phones in schools ended with the state's appeals court voting to uphold a ban on cell phones in public schools in New York city.

The Department of Education passed the ban in 2005, saying that phones are disruptive, and that students could use them to cheat on exams.

The city began to enforce the ban in 2006 – to the dismay of many parents.

A parents group sued the city, saying the ban infringes on their right to decide what is best for their children.

The court ruled against the group saying the DOE does have the right to ban the phones and adding that about the ban violates parents' rights or prevents them from communicating with their children before or after school.
